Should The American Health Service Be Like The NHS
The National Health Service (NHS) is the publicly funded healthcare system in England. The NHS provides healthcare to anyone normally resident in the UK with most services free at the point of use for the patient though there are charges associated with eye tests, dental care, prescriptions, and many aspects of personal care.
Medical bills are the most common reason for personal bankruptcy in the United States.[169] In 2005, 46.6 million Americans, or 15.9% of the population, were uninsured, 5.4 million more than in 2001. The primary cause of the decline in coverage is the drop in the number of Americans with employer-sponsored health insurance, which fell from 62.6% in 2001 to 59.5% in 2005.[88] Approximately one third of the uninsured lived in households with annual incomes greater than $50,000, with half of those having an income over $75,000.[170] Another third were eligible but not registered for public health insurance.[171] In 2006, Massachusetts became the first state to mandate health insurance;[172] California is considering similar legislation.[173]
