Should there be age limits on smartphones?

Just because parents and teachers can't disapline certain individuals doesn't mean there should be some law dictating the minimum age to use/own a smartphone.

You're not seeing my point.

All throughout school I had certain people in my class who would distract everyone else because they had the 'latest and greatest'. Those kids caused the rest of us to fail.

Everything is a distraction in school. Should there be separate boys and girls schools since the opposite sex is a "distraction?" Hell, even paper is a distraction in school. We would make paper airplanes. We would throw pencils into the ceiling. It should be the teacher's job to regulate this stuff in their classroom.

It is up to the parents whether to buy their kids a smartphone or not, and what those kids do with their phones is on their conscious. True, there has been an increase of illegal activity on smartphones, such as teens sending nude photography of themselves, bullying other kids, even purchasing illegal substances, but we can't stop ALL of them.

Kids can do all of this without smartphones.

Honestly, make it 13. They should have restrictions if you do something stupid like send an inappropriate picture text or something, but be allowed to keep it as long as you are responsible.

Exactly. Although I think [in my opinion] I would only give a young child under 13 a very basic phone if it was needed. I don't however agree with a law regulating this.

And even if there was an age limit parents could just buy one for their child.

Funny thread. While working for O2 in the UK, I witnessed a mother come in with her 7-year-old daughter for a BlackBerry.

The UK is about the only country in the world where BlackBerry is still considered. *smh*

Well, I never had a cell phone till I got my first job and started paying for it myself. Now a days, it seems kids in grade school have them everywhere they go (I'm talking about kids ages 5 through about 10 or 11). I think they should be a little bit older than that to have one but parents will argue that they want to be able to contact their children whenever then need to.

I agree. It's too much of a distraction. I don't see how they get anything done in school when they're caring a smartphone around all day.

When I'm at my daughter's school, 99% of what I see are kids with their cell phones. It makes me feel sorry for them that their parents aren't better at their job. Hell, my daughter isn't even getting a cell phone unless she absolutely needs it for an important reason.

Call of Duty and GTA V aren't for 12 year olds, yet look how many underage people get their hands on those and other games they're not old enough for.

My boyfriend's sister is 10 and she has her own smartphone, but without a contract she uses her mums all the time. She spends so much money downloading apps and accidentally installs so many virus's onto her phone without realizing

I say no as they can be quite helpful. We live in an high risk earthquake area so it's good to be able to get in contact with emergency services or our parents.

That doesn't justify kids having smart phones, not at all. If anything, give them a basic phone that can receive and make calls only. Kids/Teenagers do not, for any reason at all, need a smart phone. (or any cell phone, in my opinion)

I agree with you so much on this! Keep kids off these things; they'll affect family relationships and grades SEVERELY.

It makes sense for children not to have gadgets so early in life, as they are still in development process and would be best to enjoy life and nature without knowing gadgets. But realistically it can be hard to achieve, especially if the parents are not planning to limit their children from such technology. I agree that this is not something the law needs to enforce; after all if it does, how will the government control it? The parents could've registered the gadget under their name but eventually let the children have it. Rather than going the hard way, we can only depend on parents to prevent this from getting worse.

Not necessarily saying it's bad for children to know and use technology, but there is a time and purpose for everything. Nowadays technology grows so fast so maybe there's no standard simple phones anymore. I got that kind of phone when I was on junior high, if I remember correctly, and it was mainly for texting and calling parents only. I think with good control and explanation from the parents, the technology won't be too harmful.

I had a cell phone when I was younger but it only had the capabilities to make calls and play snake. I think the parents should be made aware of apps that help with parental vision. Allowing the parents pick and select what things the children can and can not use. Phones are becoming more prominent because most children are in situations where a phone is highly useful. I know that is why I had one at a young age. As for cameras and stuff, really - the parent just needs to have a talk about sending pictures to random people and such. They could disable the phone from sending pictures to other phones but they have access to taking pictures. Phones are great, but parents actually need to talk to their kids.
