Should we allow better gun control?

No it could have been prevented if we had a better mental health system and more responsible gun owners.

I'm glad that you said something about our mental health system. We definitely do not take good care of mentally ill people in the United States.

However, I think that gun control could help to cut down on incidents such as these.

People kill people, guns don't kill people. Stronger gun control would just cause a larger black market, making guns even more accessible. I agree with improving what's done to help treat mentally ill people who would actually do such things.

The only people who would follow gun control laws are people who were already abiding by the do not kill other people laws. The criminals and mentally ill do not care what the laws are as they will kill as they see fit regardless of how many laws we pass. People looking to kill other people will always seek out the area with the most people and the least resistance and no better place to go then one where no law abiding citizens are going to be carrying any guns. You might have noticed a lack of mass shootings that took place in police stations, gun shops and gun shows. Perhaps it's the thought of pulling one gun in a room full of gun owners as becoming a likely death sentence that is the deterrent?

As far as the recent shooting in Connecticut, the shooter stole his gun from his mother then murdered her with it so it was hardly a legally obtained firearm.

And yet another shooting, this time 2 fire fighters were killed.

Exactly what I was gonna say. If people weren't just mentally ill then there would be nothing wrong. Gun laws aren't the problem, the people causing it are. Having guns is a privilege. Guns don't kill people, the people using the guns do. In my mind there is really no way to prevent murder.

Not belittling that situation (as I know a few people that know the younger of the two victims), but that may have had a different motive.

Gun restrictions are stupid. The guns are preventing crimes. As gun sales go up, crimes go down. A gun is a tool, just like a car. More Americans die in car wreaks then by getting shot. The stats I'm looking at from 2011 show 31940 people killed by a gun. 19,766 were from suicide, so those shouldn't even count. MOST of these deaths were from rival gangs killing each other. 32,310 Americans died in car wreaks in 2011. Are they going to outlaw cars? No.

The reason they're making these laws, because of a school shooting. What the government fails to realize, the largest school massacre to this day, was done without ANY guns. A pipe bomb was placed in a school. You can get the stuff to make a pipe bomb at Lowes. If someone really wanted to kill they would do it no matter what they had to use.

Exactly. There is no way to stop murder, and taking away guns isn't the problem. If they're taking away guns, then people will find a different way.

If crazy people can't get guns, they will use other weapons which may be more dangerous like Timothy McVeigh who blew up an entire building with a bomb in Oklahoma on April 19, 1995 which killed hundreds of people.

I think better law enforcement, mental health programs, and hospitals to treat people earlier could prevent some violence.

I hate guns, and I have no support for them. I'm in Illinois, the only state that doesn't have concealed carry and I'm super glad. I am sad to see the bill that would ban ALL modern day guns didnt advance to the governors desk. It passed the democrats yesterday.

If we start making guns illegal, then we start messing with our Amendments. When we start messing with our Amendments, we keep messing with our Amendments.

If we give up our guns, we give up our freedom. Guns keep our Government from doing something stupid. Yeah, it works for some countries, but those countries are not the United States Government.

I have no idea how the process is to get a gun, but that doesn't matter. The mass killing of that school the guy used his parents weapons who she bought and took him to shoot.

And the government. Unless you consider the government a collective criminal, which wouldn't be too far from the truth.

One of the biggest factors in crime, and I'm not just talking about the two dozen people killed in this incident, but the thousands per year, is context. Bad, dilapidated infrastructure is proven to lead to increased crime rates because these sorts of things decrease the appearance of authority, activate animalistic survival instincts in people, and generally make them feel bad.

The crime rate in New York dropped in the 90s from all-time highs because law enforcement cleaned up the graffiti. This may seem absurd at first, but it is the first step in a process of disrespect which causes people to commit crimes. Crime often begins with a broken window, which leads people to think that they can get away with the likes of graffiti. Graffiti makes people think they can litter. Litter makes people think they can beg for money on the streets. It goes on and on, until violence is acceptable. All of this is because there's no feeling of authority in the air. There's nothing to respect.

If you think we can ban guns, just look at what happened when we banned drugs and illegal immigration. Both of these things happen all the time. We have to focus on making the world a better place to live, so that people don't want to kill anyone. We can't end all crime, but we can decrease it.

For evidence concerning these points, read the book "The Tipping Point."

No, not prevented , just lessons the chance. So yes to gun control, yes to backround checks for mental health, the heck with the hepa law.

I'm in the UK so I probably shouldn't be commenting on US politics, but I do admit there should probably be a few more regulations in how guns should be stored and who can get them.

But they definitely shouldn't even attempt to ban them or make them too hard to get. After all, look what happened when things like alcohol and drugs were banned (or in some cases still are). That doesn't stop people using them, and just drives the whole thing underground. Do we really want make something like guns part of the black market?

And additionally, I suspect if they ever did try and ban guns, people would flip. I suspect that some crazy people would take it as a sign of the apocalypse or evil government conspiracies and that some people probably would go on a crazed rampage or something as a result.

Don't you support increased border patrol and deportation as well as the war on drugs?

P.S. I missed you. <3
