If contracts didn't offer a better deal, then companies would either make them better or not offer them at all.
My log tells me that I've used $60 worth of calls/texts etc. this month. I pay $49 per month. If I had PAYG, I would have also had to pay for the handset outright, which would have been something like $400 at the time. So paying $60 on top of the $400 over 24 months would not be a better deal.
Clearly in my case, a contract offers the better deal. Of course this is assuming you or I use x amount of dollars per month.
There is also a get out clause so you can change providers. There is obviously a cost to it, but it may be less than the outright cost, if you decide to change at a certain stage.
I guess you could make a complaint about bad service and try to change or at least get off your contract for free. Depends on who you speak to, but no doubt this has happened before.
