Hello all,

Due to a constant renewal fee from IPB, Ive decided to convert my board to MyBB (more info here) and sell my IPB license.

I just wanted to get your guy's input on software conversions. Do you think they have a negative or positive impact on a community?

I think as long as you can point out that the change won't adversely affect the community, and make sure that a professional look is maintained, I don't mind transfers. Every community is different though.

I agree with this. Although isn't moving from IPB to MyBB a step down for you, Theezy? Wober has been with IPB as long as I can remember. If that site would look good on anything, I'd say it'd look good on Xenforo, but that's just me. Although you're stepping down to MyBB, I'm sure you can turn Wober into something amazing, Theezy, because I've seen your theme work in the past with phpBB and even Vbulletin, and you guys come out with some amazing stuff.

Switching from a paid software to a free one can be considered "a step down" if thats how you want to look at it.
Its a step up for my wallet, thats for sure :cheer:

Well, when you look at it that way, especially since a lot of paid software can be expensive on a monthly basis in addition to paid hosting, then yeah that's definitely a good thing for one's wallet! I never thought of that before. Of course this is why I still use open source software and free hosting, because the latter can be way too expensive in the long run.

I would assume that a lot of your userbase would be dedicated to premium software, and probably won't react well on free software.

Like others have stated Theezy, I would consider converting to say Xenforo rather then MyBB. the license itself is cheaper and renewal fees are much cheaper then IPB. Roughly $40/yr rather then $50+ a year.

There isn't really that much difference between IPB (or any paid software) and MyBB (or any free software) for members. And in most cases members aren't going to care so long as the forum still works fine, has a post/reply button and looks nice.

Only admins are really going to notice most of the differences between paid and free software. (And that's because they get all the settings to adjust. Members will see some minor changes in their User Control Panel, but that's pretty much it.)

And it's not like using a paid software necessarily makes a forum any better. (Again, paying money for something doesn't necessarily mean you're any better or getting a better quality product/service. )

The reason I am converting is to avoid the renewal fees. Why trade one problem for another problem?

Well then you won't be able to get away from that except by going with a free solution. That being said, MyBB is an okay choice....does seem like bit of a downgrade though.

Personally I wouldn't do it. The change will be disruptive to the community and there is a risk that something will go wrong during the conversion.

Why not sell an ad slot, to cover the licence renewal? Or perhaps ask for donations from your members?

Get that theme ported to MyBB and it will be good.
Changing software create issues always, but at the end, once your community gets adopted to the new one, you would save $50 each year.

We do not have enough traffic to make any money from advertising.

Yeah, our new theme will be very similar to that IPB theme we're using. That way members wont feel alienated or lost.

Takes more then just a nice theme to keep members happy on a new software though. If they don't like the overall feel of the software being used they aren't going to stick around just because the theme is nice.

Given the volume of posts on your forum, I'm pretty confident that you could earn $25 from advertising every six months. For example it shouldn't be difficult to sell six month button ads or no-follow text links at $10 or more each.

I'd happily give you $25 for a six month banner ad.

Well Ive pulled the trigger & we're on MyBB. Loving the software so far! Now all I need to do is sell my IPB license. 😛

Congratulations! I lurked the forum whilst you were on IPB and now on Mybb and I can't see any reason why this change should hurt Wober. The forum looks great! 🙂
