It's an American law and as such the chances of it affecting a small UK blog (soon to be hosted in the UK) are slim to none.

Having read all the blurb etc I will worry about it if either of them come in to effect which I doubt. However I agree with the Wikipedia founder that this is just the tip of the iceberg as if this happens what is stopping other countries following, the internet is suppose to be free but for how much longer???

NO!

I have already signed petitions at sopastrike.org to help stop it. Also, I am joining in on the blackout tomorrow for 12 hours.

And what do you hope to gain by doing this, as I just said else where it won't make any difference, how many tom dick or harry sites blackout for the day, those who have the power to push through these new laws will have already made a choice and you and other closing a site for a day will not even bother them, while it might make you feel good and you making a difference you not. This is not to say I am in favour of these new laws as I'm not I just think it is pointless people closing their site in protest. 😛

Well if it is deemed by SOPA to have copywritten material, you will lose all of Amercia's traffic. So it does effect everyone so far as your site is in violation

That is not something I would lose sleep over put it that way 😛 Not when I get sent official blurbs, photos, videos etc for both subjects my site is about, the only people it will effect are does who stick copyrighted material on their site.

SOPA will absolutely ruin the internet.

I assume you don't use youtube that much if you're not worried about SOPA?

Have you heard about peeps in the UK getting extradited to the US for what is considered legal in the UK but a crime in the US? It's happening right now.

And domain seizures, those are fun too.

Which is a good argument for moving over to safer TLDs such as .su (soviet Union) that aren't under US control as of this moment.

I doubt this would pass. There has been serious protests regarding this issue. If it does pass, I will have to say that American democracy will be in jeopardy. 😱 But, I have faith in the govn't. It won't pass.

I was originally going to black out but I remembered that from the time we're supposed to be 'blacking out' I won't be home and it'd actually cost my site to be 'blacked out' for longer then intended soooo i'm not going to be doing this 😛 Plus, as said before, it'ld just kill a day's worth of activity and possibly turn away new members from joining so.....i'll just keep my place online.....

you guys may find this read interesting....

Yawn, try telling me something I don't know and those who have broken serious laws, you are putting me in my site in very hypothetical situations, how about we keep to the laws in this discussion and not what could possibly happy to a uk website that confirms to copyright laws

Honestly, I don't think that true democracy has existed in the United States for decades.

SOPA in its current legislative form I do not support. I do support some online protections, such as things that prevent one from ripping off your site entire, or others who hack and or sell databases that do not belong to them.

I am against cyber crime and so SOPA should have focused on these aspects. I own a music site, we do not allow downloading, we give proper citation to where our information comes from. Under the current legislation even with proper citation my site could be deemed in breach of the law.

I also own a promo site of which sad to say, some rip off other's sites and come and pass them off as their own. Not sure how that would affect the promo board. Keep in mind it's not just big business that can get your site shut down. The law is so loosely written that yes, you could even make a claim to get a site closed. Not as easy but can be done.

Service like DCMA Take Down, that has failed in that it shut down too many innocent sites based on false claims. So what is the balance?

Free speech does not mean one can say and do anything. The intent of Free Speech in the constitution was more so to protect the citizen from political persecution for speaking out against the government. The intent now, ranges from politics to porn of which I do not agree with. Hence, slander and liable laws were establish to mitigate the over use of the 1st Amendment.

There are so many scams growing at an exponential rate online that there does need to be protections but not SOPA, at least not in its current form.

First they came for the pirates,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a pirate.

Then they came for youtubers,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a youtuber.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
