The best way is to advertise your butt off. Besides forums like this, place your link and perhaps a small banner in your signature everywhere you go. Get your friends to do it too if they aren't advertising their own stuff. Affiliate and advertise with other boards too. I've also gotten a few hits from places like topsites, but the best thing really is to add your forums to as many places like this as you can that have directories.

There are heaps of ways to do so... Like creating a site watermark to place on EVERYTHING of yours.. Make yourself an 80X80 avatar with your domain writen somewhere readable on it. Make a sig image, post youtube videos.... etc

Extremly true. People eat up youtube videos, try them. Use your signature to your advantage, and gain PR from it. Getting noticed is the first battle, then once you have a constant flow of guests you need to bring them home.BatM said:

1000 hits to your forum is great, sure, and you may well get that from posting your URL everywhere. However of those 1000 hits only a couple of people may actually be interested in your forums content. I view forums adverted here daily but most of them I will never sign up to because they simply dont interest me.
100 hits may be less impressive than 1000, but if 20 of those people are interested in your forums content then it's far better as they are more likely to register.
Posting your forum everywhere is a waste of time. You to put it on places that are RELEVANT and RELATED to your forums content an genre. Posting a pregnancy forum on forumpromotion for example is useless as there it is no way related and is simply a waste of time. Yes, it'll get hits, it may even get one or two members. But if the same forum were to link exchange with a pregnancy website or other types of forums they'd be much better off

People need to know that you are a strong admin. I have an admin team on my forum (me and two other people) and, while we do not have very much going for us yet as I just made the forum, we will not be afraid to drop the ban hammer if it comes to that.

You need a purpose. Forum Promotions Purpose is to help forum owners get they're site noticed. I haven't thought of a real purpose for my forum either.. That is the challeng of creating a forum. I go to another forum that dedicates on bringing people the latest news about Shadow as the main subject. But also, about other Sonic The Hedgehog Generals. Like Lyrics, sigs, history, character bios, game releases, and etc. It got sponsored by IGN for it's content. In fact, right now it's the UK's #1 Shadow Resource. That forum has gone a long way since I first joined.

I got this idea from the Viral advertising concept. And it pertains to the above post too.
Go to an advertising forum (like this one).
Then look for other Advertising forums that are advertiising there.
Then on all of them look for other forums that relate to the subject that is closest to your forum.
Visit them all!
Read their rules and place an advertisement banner in your signature everywhere it won't get you banned.
Then focus on making your forum look appealing and active and you should get members.
Be sure to put in a few posts everywhere you have your banner as often as you can.
Repeat 😀 .
