One thing that's persistently annoying to see is Stop/Start forums.

Tonight whilst going about my own business, thunderbird pops up in the bottom right letting me know that "some forum IS BACK". Typically somebody will start up a forum (God knows why, probably to feel the excitement of setting up a squeaky clean board), post around for a while...and then one day you visit the site to find: "Board Offline. Sorry, I think it would be best if I closed the board. It's not anybody here, it's me. I have lots of School work and I need to spend less time online, so this is goodbye. I'd like to thank *insert long list of users here*. You guys should check out *insert friends forum here*. Thanks".

Then...two weeks down the line, low and behold a mass email...

"We're back...the site everyone loves...we have revamped, we have a new skin, there will be new features...*insert more fake promises here*..blah blah blah...some come back to *lame forum name here* and tell your friends! - if you're an acive member, I'll make you a mod!"

-------------

Fuck me. This kind of thing is happening all the time - and it's seriously annoying. It makes you wonder why people even bother opening a forum in the first place, and more importantly - makes you wonder why people even sign up to these re-opened forums knowing that in a few weeks time (when the Admin realises they suck at making forums and they're struggling to get 10 posts a day) they'll be shut down again.

...that's not to say people shouldn't close down forums, I mean there could be lots of circumstances where a forum needs to close down, like the government allegedly forcing extra tax costs onto you (only joking), or joining the army etc...

*takes a deep breath*

Discuss.

I know a person who does exactly this all the time. Ive tried to talk with this person several times trying to help them and show them that they should just quit as they have been opening and closing the same forum for literally a year straight and its not going to stop. Ive given up. I just try to ignore any topics posted by that person relating to a forum they run.

Theezy, I think I know who you are talking about. Does the name associate with a forum with the name Marie in it?

Oh yeah, i get them in my email box all of the time, after being on the Package Team for a while and joining on all of those boards, i get atleast one email a day saying one is closing or coming back. It's lame.

I agree, it is annoying, but I guess we'll have to live with it. There is no real way of repairing it anyway.

omg, just got another one:
Sender: Planet Ads
Subject: Were back!

Hello all. We had a rough start a few years ago but im going to try and make this forum up again. please tell us to your friends and every one that has a website needing to advertise a website. Please come here and advertise.

***NEW***
Active for more then 1 month you get a special ad on every single advertisement for 1 month!

Thanks please stop by

 - what are these people like..

Hahaha!

Here's one i got earlier. Sigh!

That's right fellow members of PWR, the efed that everyone loved, SIW:
Sudden Impact Wrestling, is back in business!

The first card will take place in a week or so, once I get down and do some
advertising. The first card will also be a Pay Per View called SIW:
Resurrection. On this card EVERY SIW Championship will be on the line (bar
World Tag Team). Every championship has been vacated, so no one is a
champion as of right now. DO NOT ask me for what title you want, because
the card has already been pre-planned. Everyone that I asked to return
these past weeks, will be in a title match (bar one match). Are regular
show will still be Collision, in case you were wondering.

If you wish to be part of this comeback PPV, then please come to the site
at and post your profile in the
"Roster" section. ANYONE is welcome to join the efed, no matter what
experience. So if you haven't joined yet, what are you waiting for? Tell
you family, friends and everyone else on the the planet that...

SIW: Sudden Impact Wrestling is BACK in business!

I took the links out, they're not getting any free advertising.

haha yeah, that Wrestling one was what inspired me to make this topic. I love how desperate they all sound. 😀

Subject: Were back!
If you're going to spam someone's inbox why don't you spell correctly? Seriously!

I agree, they do sound desperate a lot of the time.

I agree with they are very, very annoying.

But in saying that, id rather these messages over the most recent Paypal phishing emails, people are sending which look more legit every time I get them.

I just ignore them. They'll go back down in a little time anyway. If you want to run a real forum, you have to be dedicated no matter what. If not, what the hell are you doing owning a forum? Everybody has work to do, but that's why you have staff as well.

I try not to sign up to these forums in the first place.
Same here. I only really join forums I will be active and post on.

This is why the first thing to do on my "checklist" when registering to new forums, is turn off all email contacts from members, admins, topic subscriptions, and board updates.

Still, though, some to manage do get through.

I remember one forum use to send a email reminder almost everyday. The forum would get like 8 posts a day, and the admin would be so excited. Say, the total forum stats would be 11 members and 280 posts ( and opened for months), and the admin would add messages like, "Hurry and come see what all the fuss is about".

And, LOL @ MhW ... on the comment about the board offline message. "You guys should check out *insert friends forum here*. Thanks"

They could have taken it over to some reliable staff to keep it open ( if they have any ) untill they get back or snap out of the reality that their forum is lame or whatever excuses they may have.

I restarted my site, but lost the database but no mass mail...

Yeah it is annoying.

My forum has only shut once, and that's because we were moving somewhere else. A week later, we were back on the orignal forum.

Other than that, we keep going strong.
