Yep, I used to be a troll. 😛 My sincerest apologies.

My target audience is everyone as anything could be discussed at my forum.

My target is close to anyone since almost everyone watches movies, plays games, and/or reads.

My target is aimed mostly at those that read comics and has to do with just about anything related to comics. But the problem is. You can go to any Comic forum out there and it will most likely be unlikely to get any members from them. Since they are already happy and established at that forum. Granted, you get lucky if you can find a person that isn't really happy with the place.

I'm not asking what your target audience is, rather I would prefer discussion on the point I made. And it takes a certain type of person to join a general discussion forum and actually contribute fort he sake of it, not just post for signature ads to get attention.

Nobody's forum is necessarily targeted at "everyone" because it's a general discussion forum. You have to take into account the majority of people that register and post on general forums - which is usually people from the age of 13-20.

You could advertise as being a forum for any age, but in reality you do have a specific audience.

Well, for me, I have a rather unique target audience - young writers. How do I target them? On book forums primarily. Chances are that where you find young readers, you find a certain amount of young writers, especially if that book forum has a fan-fiction community. If someone can write fan-fiction, with the right encouragement, they can write original fiction.

I think that forum promotion does not really have the right demographic for me to advertise my forum. The only reason I still stick around here is to create a few extra backlinks and Admin Discussion.

Same as Theezy. 🙂 I also run a forum where a person can discuss anything at anytime, so my target audience is also everybody. Loads of people love a forum where it's easy to discuss whatever one wants, so it's really not hard to promote. It's just making the site look good that's the hard part.

Very Interesting topic, Cosmic! +rep for that.

Okay, now that I read some posts more carefully, I guess it's safe to say that my forum is for people who are tired of strict rules, and who just want a place to relax and chill out.

And I know from experience that promoting a forum in general can be very hard. I know when I first started out, I would create a forum and my expectations would be seriously high. I think it's because I've seen sites like this one and Forum Advertiser (the original one, not the new one) get so much success that I wanted to go down that same kind of avenue. Most of you know my forum owning history by now... But thankfully, my expectations aren't what they once were, and I am now able to settle down and actually enjoy the fact that I even have a forum. Even if my interest does falter sometimes.

Haha I don't join forums that ban links in signatures XD And I always read the rules on that before joining.

We don't ban sig links. If people want to come advertise in their sigs on my forum, I don't care as long as they contribute to the forum and are good well liked members.

I know I don't really get any hits from signature links but I put them out there anyway, just in case. You just never know.

Good topic.
True, large sites don't like links on signatures nor any other promotion for other forums. On those sites one could try to start a discussion and lead it to some point where the name of your forum comes up by "accident". For example lets say you have a forum about.. abortions in japan (just an example). I would try to start a general topic about anything related to women or sex or something like (or if such one exists just reply in that) and lead the discussion to a point where the theme of your forum comes up. Then you just mention it like "mmh yes you're right. By the way this guy on this forum claimed that.." (and you link it). Or more directly "by the way there is a forum about this special topic..."..

I've found several forums {apart from my own} that allow sig ads. And that are decently large. That said, more people actually CLICK on in-post links, so they have that advantage 😛

Getting back on topic--most of our members are teens, but I actually make no special effort to steer the forum's topics, etc. towards that. It just is what it is and we build off each other's content.

As I said, this is not to discuss target audiences, but methods of reaching them and similar discussion.

My target audience is people who would rather discuss target audiences instead of methods of reaching them and similar discussion.
  just kidding.

Well, Pokemon Forums is obviously targeted to Pokemon fans and to a more subordinate degree, gamers and Anime watchers.

Dashing used to have a really specific target audience when it first began (Mario Kart fans), which made it difficult to promote. Nowadays it's a lot easier though, because it applies to a much broader demographic.

FP members are my target audience. Everyone wants their site to rank well, and get traffic, ie. members, and so my site gives tips on how to do so.

If that is what your site does, then why are you only targeting FP? You could target far bigger audiences such as DigitalPoint and V7N just to name two. :S

Anyway as for me I target administrators of websites. The broader you can make a target audience, the better though.
