Yes, I would not trust any of these things flying on torrent sites, etc.
Adobe has no reason to give you a virus, although Sony has infected people with viruses before, but all this pirated content? I wouldn't trust it.

A strong anti-virus can protect against it, so does anyone feel the cost in protection is worth the free stuff?
Not necessarily, I was watching a video from the Black Hat Security Conference before where they went over how easy it is to get around anti-virus software just by changing the signature enough so that the anti-virus no longer detects it.
I don't have the time to check, but I believe it was this one.
