I'm still brainstorming really but I've always been interested in starting a sort of play-by-posting RPG. I've just been throwing some ideas around and the main one that stuck for me was a sort of town RPG.

The idea is that everyone starts as a citizen, managing their resources, doing jobs and then they can rise up through the ranks if they wish. It would be more of a medieval town theme with random events like famines or even dragon attacks which players have to react to.

I know forums aren't doing too well right now but might be nice to have just a small community playing. What does everyone think?

The idea is good but getting a loyal audience might be difficult with apps that can do the same thing.

Yeah, I agree. But I think the problem with the apps/games is that most of the time it's about you and how everything impacts you. You don't really interact with a community or work together etc. Might be nice to have even a small community just playing around and enjoying themselves.

I'm kinda into it. I love RPG games! I'm also fond in playing RPG text games.
Sir you can get more ideas if you read the manga "THE GAMER" looking forward to this

I think we needed something like your idea by why not something Military or Sci fic based

I like your idea. I'm a big RPG gamer so I've seen quite a few good ones out there. May I suggest the following:
  • Housing System
  • Pets
  • Careers/Jobs
  • Player Based Economy
  • Guilds
  • PvP
  • PvM

I feel that those are a bit too niche and that might put certain users off.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will definitely be implementing pets, jobs, an economy and guilds. PvP and PvM will be here when I figure out how to do it using random dice rolls. Hopefully I'll see you on it when we launch 😉😀

Jobs could be like;
  • Chef/Baker - Allow players to open up a tavern or bakery. In a tavern you can come in, chat, gamble, drink beer, eat.
  • Politics - You can let players run for mayor of the town. The mayor then can choose it's cabinet. Unless there's a king, then you can have advisor and other jobs which I can further investigate.
  • Church - Someone can be the pope, priest and not sure what other jobs the church has lol
  • Military - This job is self explanatory. Sgt, General, Private, Coronal.
  • Innkeeper - Let players run an inn
  • Shopkeeper - Let players run a shop where they can sell meat, armour, weapons, herbs, jewelary and much more.

  • Cool

Loving the ideas. I was going to be the king  but there will definitely be yearly or maybe quarterly voting sessions for the mayor position. I really like the idea of the tavern as well. What do you think of the name Tiny Pixel Town? Or should I go for a less general name?

What about "Pixel Town"? Without Tiny or you can start it off as "Tiny Pixel Town" for now. Would be beast if there was no NPC's. Everything would be player made or owned. For example, the bread you buy will be made by another player. In order to make bread you need flour, for this you would need to buy it off someone who plants wheat. If you own a restaurant then in order to make those dishes you need ingrediants from someone else. Someone who owns land can plant tomatoes, potatoes, wheat, onions, appletrees and more.

For now you can start off with one town, maybe in the future you can add more kingdoms and add the posibility of waging war.

Domain for pixel town has been taken, unfortunately. Pixel Town Life is also an option (pixeltown.life). Yeah, definitely. It would help create a better sense of community if everything was player owned/run. We could even have some sort of events that happen in the future that forces certain players to have to flee to other towns.

Before you get too far into this, pause for a second. I'm not sure how much experience you have with the play by post roleplay community (so maybe you already know everything I'm about to say... if so, cool... But if not, it's very much a different kind of environment from here). I used to be a member for quite some time (I gave it up a while ago for various reasons) though I still frequent one last directory just to kinda keep touch a bit with a few people. But here's what I've learned from my time in the community...

The play by post roleplay community, by and large, doesn't like a lot of systems or things to keep track of. The more of these that are added the less will get used. Most roleplayers prefer very simple (if any) systems. Anything stat related is almost a no-go. (Most roleplayers do not like stats at all. They operate under the idea that stats limit their creative freedom. Which, in a way, it kind of does. Stops people from just being the best at everything from the get go.) Those that do enjoy stats exist but sometimes come with their own issues... Some of them look to game the system and look for ways to skirt rules and get more than everyone else.

Don't expect there to be a lot of actual job related stuff going on as it tends to be more window dressing for a character than having any actual impact. By that I mean people routinely have jobs (like doctor or journalist) but they virtually never get seen doing their job. So any kind of system based around this would pretty much get left by the wayside in a hurry. About the only exception would be in military based roleplays... but then expect a lot of crap where they don't follow rank, act out and expect special treatment.

Things like voting for a mayor/leader would very quickly turn into painful events where you're wasting your time. Feeling like it's pulling teeth each and every time to get people to participate.
Even site wide plots can fall apart very quickly because people don't join in. They express an interest in it... but then just don't actually join in. Sometimes it's because they lied and weren't actually that interested (but wanted to avoid saying so), other times they are but are way more interested in whatever personal plots they have going on currently.
Which is something that happens quite often... people get wrapped up in their own 1-2 plots and kinda ignore all else. Especially if sex is involved. And I know roleplayers oft balk when others say roleplay is a sex thing, but there is some truth to it... Many roleplayers really are just in it for the sex/smut scenes. It's always kinda funny since those that oft profess that's not why they're there really are the ones who are.
This also means that allowing mature content becomes a critical decision. If you don't allow it... that's a large chunk of the community that's going to turn away. But if you do allow it then there's extra factors to consider. (Things like which host, how to handle the mature content, etc...)

Furthermore if you don't allow celebrity pictures to be used then don't expect a lot of interest. Sad truth is that most roleplayers these days are way more interested in the pretty pictures and writing (in my eyes) what amounts to little more than celebrity fan fiction than anything else. (I've seen countless times people will say it's not about celebrities but then they will go on about how they only use certain celebrity faces and won't join sites if they're taken.)

So, all this said, if you want to go for this idea then do it. But just go in with reasonable expectations and the understanding that virtually every decision you make will turn someone away. Don't expect like 500 members to join in the first week. (You might never even get 500 members... Or maybe you will but it'll take a few years.)

This forum is doing great before http://terrarp.net/

they have a roll dice feature and they tackle most of the time in fighting a boss and discovering new places through role play game posting. I find it very hard to join the quest and adventures because they're really good at it, very creative and very fluent in English. I think members like me whos only an average in English will fell out of place.

Thank you for thoughts Virus. Regarding the stats and things, I agree. Not only in terms of more experienced users not liking them but also the fact that it might be much more beginner friendly if we have fewer stats and things to keep track of.

Thanks for sharing, I'll have a look at it when it comes back online. I want to create a community that is much more beginner-friendly so everyone can have a chance at enjoying themselves. Less focus on long and well-written paragraphs. Would that be something that appealed to you?

I'd be more than interested in this. When this is up, or if you need help with anything let me know.

I skimmed this, and I have a question as to how you will manage everything. Everyone manages their resources, does their jobs, etc. It sounds easy on paper, but how will you be personally managing everyone and everything? If you need food, and I have 1 loaf of bread to my name, I eat it. How are you going to know I ate said bread. It's RP, but there are still people that will try to slide past the system even in a RP server. That being said, what's stopping them from just "not eating said bread" and going the day without it. It's a bad example, but the only one I can come up with on the top of my head.

I'm just wondering how you'll plan on monitoring everyone's progress, everything, etc.

Health/Stamina bar maybe? Time could slowly drain your health/stamina bar, eating food and potions could raise it.

yes! something like In a specific topic.. its about gathering resources for wood. all we need to post is a simple paragraph and then press the dice to know how much wood we get. and can post again after a few hours.

It's a good example, I understand what you're trying to explain. What I want is a more beginner-friendly one because I think a lot of these RPG forums tend to intimidate new users who have no idea what to do. So I want to try and minimalise as many of these daily things like food.

But one thing I have worked out is sleep. So, what I'll have is, people earn different amounts of coins for posting around based on their jobs and where they are posting. After a while, the amount they earn will be much more limited because they need to "sleep". After around 24 hours, they will start to earn the normal amounts again. All of this is automated so I won't have to do anything or check.

This is what I have worked on so far for the forum, I still have quite a bit to add of course -
