Okay this is a rant so if you dislike rants leave now 😀.

Okay I recently have been seeing more and more new admins. Most of which are just doing it to have the power.

Heck i have been seeing tons of topics here and other area with things like "how to install this mod" How to install x forum software" How to change x setting".

That is just crazy. I can understand sometimes why they ask these things, but the ones who are thinking its easy and no problem is what gets me.

Oh and I have noticed alot of people use PHPBB just because it is so common. So they think this has to be easy. Yet they go to get mods and they are shocked at what you gotta do.

My Main point is, if you are just trying to make a forum to be the admin of it, just don't.

Join forums that have been successful and be a part of that community.

It doesn't hurt to not have any power.

I think some people are just trying to see how it's like to be an admin. Giving their shot at the glory. If they fail they should give up 😛 But if they succeed, more power to them.

Some also do it for the experience and how to use the back-end of a forum.

Even though these people do this just for some primitive reason, I don't like to discourage them from their endeavor. Even though they start out just wanting power, they might end up finding themselves getting more interested in the higher-minded aspects of running a forum as they get into it.

That's how I was. Years ago I started a free forum that had actually become quite active, but at one point my power tripping totally screwed it up and now that forum is no longer in existence. Awhile after it failed, I knew it was my fault and became disappointed. As a result of my disappointment, I found myself wanting to try again just to grasp the more higher-minded aspect of running a forum. This created a good deal maturity in me.

Yes I cna understand that. i mean we all started somewhere lol.

I am more targeting the ones that see a forum that has a active community daily and such. So they go off and make basically the same thing and maybe a week later they quit do to no members.

The forum world is like a small world in real life. Little communities with members, some larger, some smaller and they all need people to run them. Inevitably, everyone thinks that they could do a better job of running these community's.

I do disagree with people making forums for the sake of making forums, but everyone makes a forum to be an admin so they can do it "better" themselves.

I bitch about this all the time. But then again, it more or less described me when I was setting up BC. I had had some coadmin experience on another IP.Board forum before... but nearly enough. It died a month or so after I joined the staff.

I was basically a n00b with no experience trying to recreate the glory of the old forum that died. But oddly enough it succeeded and now has almost 400 users and 28,000 posts.

But this doesn't happen every day.

I agree but disagree with this....

We all started out as new admins...however I learned how to do everything myself because I like to teach myself how to do things...like you said phpbb mods aren't exactly easy to install for a novice because it's overwhelming.

My belief is if you are going to make a forum figure out everything yourself...it is worth your time in the long run.

I remember finding out the word "forums" years ago. (about 5 years ago, now age 17) by joining a forum called "Pirates Random Room". I was a member on the proboards forum and I had talked to a lot of people and I was like, "Hey! I like this thing!" Ever since then, I have been addicted to forums and getting to chat outside the real world. Something to do on free time. So I got more and more interested in how this forum things work. So I saw how to create one and made one. I learned everything myself and then when I got stuck on things, I contacted support and got training. I now have an active license with the 2 most known software. Vbulletin and IP.Board. I also found out that paid hosts are worth paying money for. 😉

They definitely are. Just started using vBulletin myself.

Avid skinner/modder of:
ProBoards (JS coder), woltLab BurningBoard (PHP modder), MyBB (PHP modder), phpBB (PHP modder).
Testing my luck at what vB has to offer. 🙂

Been a fan of forums and probably always will be..

Yes, I am literally addicted to them xD

I have basically used every software there is. I used Vbulletin a good while, it's really good too! I just prefer IPB a little more 😛

Gotta learn somehow. Even if they fail, it's a good learning experience. Took me many tries before I got an active forum.

As a Admin of a Big Forum, ive seen shit like this also.
Members always wanna make their own forums when they simply can just contribute to your forum and work their way to admin.
Then..... They ask you to help advertise there forum.

I am New to the Admin World. I did Mine Cause I want the Experience. And im soon to take a Digital Web Design and Computers Class. Just looking for the experience.

Well there are also the people that know what they want, they just don't know how to accomplish it. Like I want to change the color of x style, I just can't find the setting in the admin panel. Or I know some PHP, but where is this function defined?

I know what you mean though. Most of those forums die though.

I'd agree with the view that we all have to start somewhere. I remember when I first got into forum ownership (quite a few years ago). Originally, I thought it would be an easy way to build up a website - because the members would create the content. How wrong I was. I quickly learned that forums are actually probably the hardest type of site to establish from scratch - people are reluctant to join a new forum that has little activity.

It takes a lot of time, commitment and hard work to establish a new forum. But the difficulty is part of the challenge and what makes it worthwhile.

Couldn't have said it better myself. If you follow the above text, you'll find yourself with a successful forum in no time :great:

I agree. I hate phpbb though because of the amount of work you have to do to add mods SMF is much easier. But if your not going to do the work don't even bother.

Even before and after you start it up, and try get it going, it can be troubling. Things such as a Name, Hosting, where to get their domain, what software and other things can really trouble some people. I suggest that they Google some host's they might be looking at, get some reviews, look around and then set everything up.

I at first just plunged into forum owning, not exactly realizing what I was doing. I think that's one of the reasons why I opened and closed my forums so much, was because I would just jump into it and not realizing what I was getting myself into. Now I have settled down to a decent host that I can hopefully live with for at least three years to come. I'm not an administrator just so I can boss people around. I'm in it so I can make a few friends, chat about what I and others want to chat about freely, and just simply make a few friends and have a good time. I mean, sure, that's what places like Facebook and MySpace are for, and I understand that. I guess I just wanted something a little more interactive, I guess you could say.
