Users that make a forum just to be admin.

Like webtower said.. A lot of people just make sites to be an admin to get the feel of different areas within a forum software. Like the controls ect.. I do it sometimes.

Atleast 1 member out of 100 members will go on to make a forum, like mine. I constantly ask them why, they can't or don't answer. I tell if they want to run a forum, they are more than welcome to help the one their in right now.

I really really hate this. Because you know what 98% of those are going to fail. As most of them have no clue what to do, they just slap on a forum and expect it to grow and like xwadigg said,(oh hi dig) they come to you're forum to advertise.

I'm pretty sure I was a total n00b running my first few phpBB forums, heck I even copied the forum I was very active on(still am) but you know what I had intentions, intentions to grow large and be unique. And here I am. Unique forum, unique members and enjoying a small community. If you are just creating a forum just for the heck of it, don't let you're expectations go above the first bar, because you will be disappointed.

Oh and one more thing, if you are already running a forum, and struggling to keep it alive, do create another forum and expect it to go anywhere either.

Heh, I created a forum just to be an admin. But somehow it's worked out. I don't know how. I made mistakes, but somehow it turned around and I'm honestly surprised it got to where it is now... I guess I'm a fluke of nature. 🙂

I created a forum, originally, because I wanted to make my own web based RPG that had my creative flair (I guess) and my ideas, and then a member base would build upon it. I then started Administrating forums because I liked to do it, and it's as simple as that - I admit that I did like the power, but I enjoyed being behind the action.

I was one of those question askers, and I started from next to no knowledge. So, my questions may have annoyed some, but it's because I genuinely wanted a successful forum that people would post on because it was fun to do so.

I'm new to the world of forums compared to all you guys. I've been using one to chat on for a couple of years and only this year did I start using 4 or 5 others to increase my network.

I recently opened a couple of forums, one on a specific subject that is never going to be a busy forum, but that is not the point of it. The other is an experiment and I will use it to learn over time how to use the admin controls etc.

Am I on a power trip? I don't think so, I run my own department at a large software company and also run my own business, so don't need the 'trip'. I'm on a learning trip and if you don't give something a go, you will never know if it is worth doing.

Will I be a success? probability is against me, but If I work hard at it & listen to people who are already a success, then I have a chance to produce something worthwhile that people may want to use. Time will tell.

I'm enjoying the experience and over time I hope I will be able to contribute more and more useful information and advice to the community.

Well, yeah, that was kind of my thing too, I finally gave up on running a forum, because heck. There are millions of others like the one I used to have, and I think the only unique thing about mine was the name. It was like, "hello! there are hundreds of other forums like that out there! Just apply to be an administrator or moderator on one of them and be done with it! It's no good wasting your time running around to all these hosting sites; you're only fooling yourself!" I'm sorry I'm so negative, usually I'm not. I try to be positive on almost anything. I guess when I closed Marie 1988, it's like that little alarm bell went off inside my head that there was more to life than owning a forum and trying to make it successful. It was then I realized that I could be working on trying to help someone else make their forum successful, instead of running around to all these free and advanced hosting sites. It was pathetic, and I'm glad I am finished with it. Besides, it'll be a lot less stress if I have to be away from home as well.

I guess some of this could depend on the type of forum you are running. If you are running a specialised forum then having 50 members could be seen as a success, if all 50 members are getting something from it and using it regularly.

Okay this is a rant so if you dislike rants leave now 😀.

Okay I recently have been seeing more and more new admins. Most of which are just doing it to have the power.

Heck i have been seeing tons of topics here and other area with things like "how to install this mod" How to install x forum software" How to change x setting".

That is just crazy. I can understand sometimes why they ask these things, but the ones who are thinking its easy and no problem is what gets me.

Oh and I have noticed alot of people use PHPBB just because it is so common. So they think this has to be easy. Yet they go to get mods and they are shocked at what you gotta do.

My Main point is, if you are just trying to make a forum to be the admin of it, just don't.

Join forums that have been successful and be a part of that community.

It doesn't hurt to not have any power.

What it is that is worse than this.....People who beg and beg to be mods and I have even recieved a few serious requests to be admins, and then go completely off the handle when their request is denied.

As far as people creating a new forum soly for the power or simply not thinking of the work involved, I don't mind, I'm willing to help if I can. heck I even registered resently and was made moderator with in twenty-four hours of registry on one such forum.

To be honest, my intention and main motivation for developing forums has been the same as it was 7 years ago, and that is purely for the social aspect.

I never cared much about being "Admin", per se, but I did want to be a founder of a successful forum. Because if I'm Co-Admin, it's not my work, I'm only helping. If I'm founder, it is my work and the satisfaction of success is always sweeter when its your own work.

But essentially, I run/go to forums for discussions, not the power.

Your new forums look great Sean, good luck with them. I'd also agree with you that success depends on your motivations and expectations. Success for one person might be having a handful of knowledgeable members regularly discussing a topic. For another it might be having 1,000 members active every day.

This was the original reason that I actually started a forum. I thought of power. I'm mature enough to admit such. And I started back way in the day. 7 years ago...2002. I founded my first forum when I was 10 years old.

It did not succeed. But with each forum I founded and with each new member that I learned from, and about. My maturity grew and grew, as did my intelligence as well as my understanding of a human psyche. You could say that my own members mentored me.

And now, I have seven years of forum experience under my belt. I've communicated with literally, thousands of people. Been staff of boards that only made it to 3 members, and others that had over 60,000 members. I've learnt the proper way to deal with a huge amount of situations, and I can easily understand someone's personality and psyche.

So if someone has a chance to grow their aptitude for forums. Something bad can turn into something good.

Being an admin is not about having that power.....it's a responsibility.

GFX Reloaded is just my 5th board, all the others have failed. But I never did it because of the power.
After years of being an operator (@) on mIRC, I have learned the way to communicate with other people, how to apply the rules, and many other things that I could apply to a forum.

So my advice, just like some of the others users above me: If you want to create a board just to be an admin, don't do it!

Well,I never wanted to be an admin, but I did want my own forum,so I made a gameing site. XD
It failed.
That was along time ago.
Now I know how to fully operate a forum.
