I need a bit more info about the while VBulletin thing, is it for $195 ? And then you have everything forever ?

It is $195 for vBulletin and it's just for vB 4. When vB 5 comes out you will have to buy that. Then you have to pay for the domain and hosting obviously.

It depends what you mean by renew. If you buy vb4 then you will have to pay again for vb5 if you want it so you do have to kind of renew the license.

But you don't have to pay to renew your license ?

vBulletin replaced renewal with having to upgrade when a new major version comes out, basically.

HINT: If you think $195 is an expensive option, you could always get a used license from someone else. The Admin Zone always has one or two people trying to sell a used IPB or vBulletin 3/4 license.

Go for IPBoard, it's only $150. You can even buy IP.Content so you get the CMS features that the $285 vB offers.

vBulletin is really going downhill lately, I don't recommend purchasing it at this point.

Thus if I wait to buy VB until the 5 comes out I have to pay once $195 ? Is that correct ?

And what new features or improvements brings the 5 ?

Thanks timestandstill for your explanation but I just love VB, the first forum I joined is on VB and is big.

If you wait till vb5 comes out you'll be able to use it indefinitely. For as long as you wish but what you won't be able to do when vb6 comes out is receive updates for it you'll have to purchase another renewal to receive updates thus you have to purchase vb6.

Example: I purchased a vb3 license which expired a few months ago so I cannot receive/download updates for vb3 unless I purchase vb4. The same will apply to you though I can still use vb3 I just can't download the patches etc for it. Hopefully that helps. 🙂

Ignore the vB haters. Its a quality product.. At least I can say about the 3.x.x series. Ive not been interested in upgrading to v4 until later on when its an established product with a vast selection of skins and modifications.

Anyways if you buy a license you are entitled to a life time of vb4 and versions under that (2 or 3)..

K this has helped me alot, but when does VB5 come out ? And what new features will it bring ? Will it be stable witout any errors, bugs ?

It isn't really helping me use the tools of the ACP is it ?

thus it can take months before VB5 comes out ?

I don't think the situation can been clearly explained.

For a year after your purchase of vBulletin, you will not have to pay for updates to vB4 (4.01. 4.02, 4.1. 4.15. 4.9), et cetera. Once that year is up, you will have the option to renew your license for something like 25 dollars, and this renewal will allow you to update your vB4 forum for free again.

However, once vBulletin comes out with the fifth version of its software, vB5, which we don't expect for a couple years yet, you may have to pay a pretty hefty sum (something like $150) in order to upgrade to that entirely new version of the vBulletin software.

I hope this makes sense. You may also want to look into other softwares such as IPB and FuseTalk before making your decision to buy vB.

A I see now, are those 24 dollars worth it ? I mean do you really need those updates ? And are updates mods you can download, or style's ?

hmm then VB4 is the best hit right now then if its a year or more before it comes out.

IPB gives you new major releases for free.

If there isn't a unique feature you REALLY NEED in vB, there's no reason you should pay the premium for a lesser quality product.

Ipd, cannot match the look of VB

This is a older site(vb 3.8.x) however, just imagine what you can do with a more powerful software in vb4

www.aboxcafe.com

No, ipd board can match the quality the mods, themes, etc of vb.

This is why I hate vBulletin. Too expensive. They just keep trying to make you pay money.

vB4 has only just been released a few months ago. vB5 won't be out for well over a year.
