I'm getting closer and closer to purchasing vbulletin...

Phpbb3 just doesnt seem to be seo-friendly to me.
Yes there's mods but most of them are completely out-dated with no support.
Hell, I tried to install the phpbb3 seo mod and half of the code was not even in my template.

Anyone comment on this? Is it worth it?

Not with Internet Brand's way of running it. But vB is very SEO friendly if you install vBSEO

Go buy XenForo, it's SEO friendly and the mods are coming fast. Lots of the vB/IPB community members have moved to XF.

vBulletin has had lots of controversy and customer dissatisfaction recently. If you are going to buy a licence from them ask if you can have access to the existing customer feedback section of their forums. If they won't give you that access, explain that you would like to see what their existing customers are saying about them and ask what they are afraid of by letting you see that?

If you are not already familiar with the VB software I'd recommend that you take a good look at IPB before buying VB.

If you do decide to buy it, try to buy a used licence from an existing customer. There are lots of people selling them cheaply because of the issues VB had. Obviously you need to be careful that any licence offered for sale is genuine and eligible for resale.

NamePros doesn't seem to have a lot of vBulletin licenses for sale, but I see them all the time on Digital Point (though I wouldn't buy it for over $50 if I were you).

vBulletin, yes, but not yet IPB. Hasn't the target been more or less former vBulletin customers?

Don't get me wrong, Matt and Kier have a good relationship (and Matt said several times "Good Luck" at Kier and XenForo on Twitter). It's good to see Evanescence and SBD (IPB designers) do stuff for XenForo, but I'd assume they'd consider doing things in conjunction with their IPB businesses.

But is phpBB SEO really that hard to install?

el canadiano, yes mostly vBulletin customers but several IPB customers who just prefer the XF software I think.

Well, of course, but do bear in mind, there are more people converting to XenForo because they wanted to convert out of vBulletin, rather than converting to XenForo. IPB (as of late) hasn't done something to anger their customers in the magnitude that Internet Brands did, and even then, the conversion rate from vBulletin to IPB really shot up from December to maybe April.

I know someone on The Admin Zone (a former moderator) who had eight "lifetime" licenses at vBulletin (six were unused). So much for the "lifetime" thing.

But back on topic. Has he bought the vBulletin?

"as of late" made me remember the anger when IPB 2 wasn't free, lolz. But yeah of course disgruntled vB users followed Kier. I wouldn't suggest buying vBulletin as it is, even if I use it.. the software is good, the company is a little more... edgy in terms of customer satisfaction shall I say?

Internet Brands who own vBulletin are currently suing XenForo - More 🙁

I won't lie, that made news everywhere except here.

Isn't it desperate, Fergal? =/

Yea it sound like a social network film... I think VB is just full of it, but I still enjoy using VB ^^

I'm not sure of the circumstances, but if they used their own code that was put on vB, they are free to use it on XenForo. This happened with SMF and caused many staff members to leave. Fact is, nobody signed over the rights to what they coded to the LLC, so technically anybody who has done coding for SMF has complete copyright over it.
Though that's way off topic.

But why do they even need ANY vBulletin 3 code? After all, Jonathan's interview summed it up.

IPB 3 did not need ANY IPB 2.x code
phpBB 3 if I remembered correctly also was a code rewrite
MyBB 2.0 I know for a fact will not need an ounce of MyBB 1.x code either.

If they could do it, then why use vBulletin code for XenForo?

Not necessarily true, when you work for a company and code for them, you don't automatically get ownership of that code, the code is normally owned by the company that paid you to write it. I don't know the specific circumstances of this case either.

Yeah, the vB code is Internet Brand's intellectual property as outlined in IB Adiran's post. It cannot be used by ex vB devs.

That's what I meant, if they weren't paid for it.
Do you know if vB payed them to write the code?

With SMF there was no agreement, no payment, no contract, nothing. Which is why things got crazy.

I also thought that becaise if your paid to do a job then the person or company then owns the product you did for them (including code and images).

So i should try for a used license?
If you insist on using vb then yes. Be careful though that you are buying it from a trusted place/person.
