Is getting vBulliten really worth the cost? I've been to the site and I do not really see why is such a big deal to get it. It's just another forum provider. Will using vBulliten really make my forum look more professional, and get me more members? They are asking for a lot of money for their services. Should I get it?

Hard question, I want to get it to. But don't have the money for it, or just don't want to spent all my money in it.

I would say yes if you don't pay by yourself but in a team. That you split the sum so no one is having problems paying.

I mean its indeed much. But it is the best design out there. It is in one word brilliant if you can know how to use it well.

I can create a fund for my members to donate to, and when we raise enough money we can buy vbulletin. That is what I will most likely do. That way people can donate as much or as little as they want to.

If you can yes, However IP Board is being a bit more Favorited these days. However I'm still on the vBulletin boat 🙂

vBulletin for me is the easist to add MODs to, easiest to skin (in my opinion) and for me has a great admin panel which isn't that hard to navigate round.

For me, vBulletin is the best forum software there is just now. IPB is good, but adding MODs is much harder as they require more template edits than that of vBulletin (vB has a Product Upload feature, so it's more like upload and it works).

Yes, vBulletin is worth every penny. I have been using it for a few years now and it's so easy to mod, the templates are brilliant and I do believe it makes your forum look more professional, thus getting you more members. It is quite expensive and getting members to donate would be a good idea but if you can I say buy it.

If I have enough money in my Paypal, I would. But if I don't, I'll still be happy using MyBB

I like Mybb and it does what I need a forum to do, plus some. I have used vb in the past and do like it though.

I would never buy vB. I checked out both options extensively, and IPB is definitely the best choice. I purchased it about 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I cannot tell you how many vB converts we get complaining about vB's customer service. IP.Board 3's feature-set is great. Plus it's less expensive, and you don't have to buy a new license after every major point increase. (For example, you had to purchase a new license for vb4, I believe. IPB2 --> IPB3 was no extra charge.)

That's not really true anymore as of IPB3. Now we have "applications", which most of the time require no edits.

I know one of our moderators wants us to go Vbulletin, because she saw another general chat board get successful with it. I'm not ready to go that route, for one thing, the moderator I believe is younger than I am even, and I don't know if she'd be able to, and even if she was able to, there will come a day when I'd have to pay for it myself, or we'd have to split the costs, and I'm having trouble maintaining the forum as it is already. Running a Vbulletin forum is seriously out of the question for me. Besides, VB has way too many features that I would not be able to comprehend with, so I am definetly sticking with PHPBB.

If you know what you are doing, you can mod MyBB until it's quite like vB 3.

For example, take the profile of this forum that I'm developing for a guy: LINK.

If you can afford, and afford to revert, then why not test it out and see its performance? If not, then I would steer clear of making such financial changes.

I second VB.

I would say no, you don't have as much freedom if use vB

It is great software though.

Consider though, that a forum I've gone to for years and means so much to so many people is having financial issues, vB not withstanding.

If you have a good concept, good theme, active staff and good advertising it shouldn't matter what you are running.

Hell I know a very active site that is still running Vanilla.

But IPB3 and vB4 are both much easier to run than phpBB3, SMF and MyBB.

I think it's a complete waste, especially in these times where a lot of sort-a-like engines are build. I myself prefer phpBB3 and I think that you can make phpBB3 to what ever you want, with installing your MODs. If you simply install the MODs you want you get a better forum than vBulletin.

Posey have you ever admined a site using VBulletin?

Yes, I did. Two actually..

(I know I'm a bit biased, that's because I'm a phpBB3 Coder/MODder and not vBulletin)
