Are your Mod staff all global Mods? If so what about giving some of them responsibility for a specific section of your forum?
If you are asking about the gaming forum in your sig, you could appoint one Mod to have responsibility for the Entertainment section and another to have responsibility for the Gaming Discussion section. That way you get to keep all your good staff, allow them to spend their time on the topics they like best and have the benefit of not having too many staff on a single forum. This solution will work even better if your staff are responsible for keeping the forums active as well as moderating posts.
Well, to prevent having too many staff on your forum, have 1 or 2 Administrators to start with, and more or less one Global Moderator for each category (depending on size). In fact, with the Moderators, you only need to go that big when you have 100+ members.
2 admins and 4 moderators is a good amount for your forum, Id say. I mean, you've got to figure that not all of them are going to be on all the the same time... and if they do all get on at the same time everyday, then you should diversify. Try to find users that are on at different points in the day.
I know from my experiences, if someone is going to come and spam up my forum, its likely going to be at some strange hour in the morning. So why not make some guy a mod who lives on the opposite side of the world from me, so he can be on (or at least check the site a few times every so often) while I, or the other mods aren't around?
No, I didn't hire them to keep them active, I hired them for protection, and because I didn't think I had the time for the forum, and was going to resign. However, two staff sent in great applications, and we couldn't choose so we went with adding both. I don't think I have to many staff members just wanted to see what others think, and so that I wouldn't add anyone else if I had too many or enough. You guys have answered my question, thanks. I want to keep this open for others with the same problem.
I, alone, make up about a quarter of the forum posts and that doesn't include my posts in the forum games/spam forums. I disagree as well. Also, I kind of think the staff members should be the most active, to be role models, or something along those lines.
