The original anti virus of our home desktop is a licensed Symantec which was given free to us by a vendor. But when it lapse in 2014, we decided to shift to a free anti virus since we are responsible users of the computer, i.e. lesser risk for viruses. But now we are using Avast. The issue with free anti virus is the drag that it gives the operation as it checks a website or a file that is opened.

I don't really pay for antivirus and of the free ones, I am most satisfied with Avast because it gives me the right amount of protection without the unnecessary stuff that affects the PC performance.

I do use Avast the free option. I know some will go with paid, but what's the point spending each year. Yet if you have an good router you would of an firewall right there

I cringe when people pay for anti-virus software. The best protection to get is a really good anti-malware were the definitions are updated at a much higher rate than that of anti-virus software. The only thing I have is Malwarebytes and a little common sense and haven't had any issues.

Also make sure your computer is up-to-date as well.

There is no reason to pay for savvy people like me. There is this site for example where you can get plenty of free offers for AV's.

Just Windows Defender for me, when I can't trust all others. Used to adore Malwarebytes until that gave me problems, especially that unforgivable memory leak that happened months ago.

But let's be honest here... the best antivirus that everyone should have these days is common sense.

Kaspersky Free
Microsoft Windows Defender
Avast Free Antivirus
Avira Free Antivirus 2017
Comodo Free Antivirus

Back then I use Kaspersky, but now AVG is more reliable for me. I would recommend Avast as well as this is used by my friends.

Windows Defender within Windows 10. That's all you really need if you know what you're doing.

For customers, I always provide a paid option between Emsisoft and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Everything else is trash that I won't touch with a 10-foot pole.
