I like mobile websites more since I don't need to install an app, and I can just use a mobile web browser like Dolphin Browser to read the news, reply to e-mail, or make a post on a mobile site.

I find mobile apps more easy to use and makes my job faster. Opening up a browser and then loading the website takes time, whereas an application can do the same work with ease.

I think Apps like Twitter, and Facebook still need to load content from the web, and it can be slower if you own a slower Google Android Smartphone or tablet with just 256-512MB of RAM, and a single-core 800MHz CPU.

The Facebook and Twitter App also slowed down my older tablet with just 256MB of RAM and a 800MHz CPU running Android 2.3 gingerbread.

Most of the recent applications for forums and social networks need to load content from the web. But, I don't really use them. Actually, I think that they are not well-protected and if someone gets access to the administration of the application, (s)he could upload any files (s)he wanted and would infect my tablet / cell phone.
I love visiting websites which have a responsive design. They are easy-to-use and as a webmaster I always buy (custom) themes which have a responsive design. They are very cheap!
Building an application usually takes much time and you need to have many economical resources.

:great:

I agree that some of those mobile apps could have security problems like too many permissions to a user's data on their mobile device.

I think well designed mobile sites like http://mobile.theverge.com/ which are designed with well written HTML code, CSS, have small image file sizes, and JavaScript would load pretty fast on a decent wifi or faster 3G-4G data connection. Most Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connections are also pretty fast these days where the speed difference is not as noticeable when you have a strong connection.

Submiting Apps to the Google Play, iOS Apps Store, and other Apps stores also sometimes require a license fee before you can submit apps to it for people to download.

I think if you open your web browser, and use it to visit multiple mobile sites, the time save by using Mobile apps would not make much of a difference.

Most popular mobile web browsers like Google Chrome, and Opera Mobile has tab browsing, bookmarks, and autofill and auto link keyword suggestion URL support which can save time.

App developers need to specify permission like using SD card, access to phone contacts, etc; while developing and the same will be shown to user when he installs the App. Any application cannot access something outside the permitted area.

And Android recently is concentrating more and more on security features rather than feature enhancement. So mobile apps aren't as insecure as you may think. 🙂

Also even if a hacker gets access to a developer's play store account, he still can't update the file, as he would need to sign the app with a key he initially used to sign the first version of the app, and the key asks for password and stuff. So its not so easy to create a rogue update to existing app.

There is a recent Android exploit which let an App secretly take your picture without a users permission.

A security researcher has found that by creating an app that exploits a simple loophole in Android, he could get a device to take photos with its camera and upload them to a remote server without user permissions.

I think using the Google Chrome browser in Android, disabling scripts like Javascript would be the safest way to browse the web on a mobile device since Chrome is less likely to exploit its App with loopholes to take pictures of its users, and when scripts like Javascript is disable fewer programs embedded in websites can spy on its users.

Same here. They're so much more convenient, and it's great that most popular sites already have their own mobile app.

In my opinion, it depends on what it actually is. If it's a mobile app for something other than a forum, I'll use it. If it's a mobile app for a discussion board, I'd much prefer the mobile site over the app.

I think mobile apps are good for social networks like Facebook where people use Facebook as an alternative to texting with Facebook Messenger Chat because FB chat is free when you use your home internet connection. More people are also using FB as a news reader since a lot of people post full articles, or links to full articles on the Facebook homepage Newsfeed. Facebook Log-in makes logging into other Apps and games which use Facebook Log-in easier.

For forums, blogs, and static websites, I find using a mobile website better since I visit a lot of blogs, forums, and static websites per day, or sometimes visit a site only because it was the first web result when I use a search engine like Duckduckgo or Google to search for information on a site.

I think most Mobile Responsive Website like http://techmeme.com/m/ with mobile templates/themes are pretty easy to use on mobiles, and designed for mobile devices, and the slower 3G and slower wireless networks which many older phones like the iPhone 3GS still use.

Alternative mobile web browsers like UC Browser, Maxthon, and Firefox for Android, and the default Safari browser for iOS are pretty good when it comes to usability, and speed.

Sites. I have never, ever bothered with an app for anything. Ever.

I will prefer mobile apps. You simply go to play store and buy or free install different applications but in mobile websites most of the applications as far as I know gives error while streaming and also there are chances of virus.

I tend to run into a lot of streaming problems when using the official YouTube video streaming App, but when I use Google Chome to visit the mobile Youtube website at m.youtube.com has fewer slow down and streaming problems in my experience.

Some of the Apps on Google Play may contain a lot of ads, and notifications which pop up when you use the app, or when you are connected to the internet. Some Apps even require registration by e-mail, and send advertisements to my e-mail address. There are also rare chances of viruses/malware on Google Play, and other Android App stores.

I like that a mobile website does not send me ads when I close the web browser.

I have been using Google Chrome mobile web browser in Google Android, and never gotten infected by a virus according to KS Mobile's Clean Master Antivirus scanner App which also protects Chrome from visiting dangerous sites with the link scanner app in Clean Master.

I like both. Mainly because my old HTC One V runs slow on certain apps, but my 2012 Nexus 7 runs both very well.
