I heard "Pupply Linux" loads pretty fast. I'm thinking of making a computer which can load very quick when turned on for basic stuff like web browsing, and word processing.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Puppy Linux loads fast.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Depends on your Window Manager too.
Gentoo with Fluxbox/awesomewm/Ratpoison/xmonad is as light as it gets.

Personally, I use Arch with Fluxbox and it's incredibly lightweight.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Ubuntu loads fast too.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Something like Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux would be good for an older computer.

Seriously.. the OP stated for older computers. Ubuntu is a silly suggestion.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

I've used Ubuntu 10.04 on computers from 2001... How is this silly?

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Because Ubuntu is the most bloated distribution, and Gnome is the heaviest Environment. You need at least 768mb to run it properly. Using it on a computer with 128mb of RAM will destroy your hardware.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

I have used a min of 256 and still could run multiple applications and load multiple tabs.

But I get your point.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

I know it can be done, but its really not suggested by many and Ubuntu devs themselves.

How old is old? 2mhz processor or 500mhz? 😛

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

I'd say Windows 7 would do the job. Its incredibly functional and has a bunch of features other OS don't. You should try and get the Ultimate if you can though and use the 64bit disk. Thats what I use and its lightning fast.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Windows 2000 boots pretty fast in my experiences. Only on desktops though.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

^ windows 2000, you rather have xp which much faster than 2000. I would use windows 98 depending how old your computer is.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

FreeBSD would do good if you know what you are doing.

A unattended install of Windows XP could also be very good.

Then there is an Arch Linux install or Tiny Core Linux.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Windows XP should actually do the trick. Windows XP is made for older computers 🙂 I don't know if XP will load faster, Ubuntu or Windows XP will work. I am pretty sure.

Linux Mint XFCE.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

So I've been trying stuff out, and Puppy Linux works really good. It runs great on even an old 450 MHz machine with only 384 MB of RAM.

I recommend it.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Started using Puppy Linux today off of a flash drive and it's been great. Been looking at both it an Damn Small Linux, will probably go with it for my mom's old computer.

Re: Which is the fastest loading operating system for older

Just remember the more stuff you add the more bloated and slow it will perform.
