10.8 is tons better than 10.6
Marginally better than 10.7
But you're right...good investment. 😉
Because it's the best Apple OS yet. 😎

I think the aim is to make each OS they release better than the last, which they have been successful at. However we are approaching the end of the version 10 series, so I wonder what could be planned for the 11.x series as Apple has come really far since 10.6 and have outdone themselves.

Yea, macs are expensive, ok.
But the system is very cheap.

It's 20 bucks for me. 20 bucks is a weekend's worth of food, maybe a little more. Or a textbook.
It's not worth a few mediocre updates to apps I don't use
I thought of how much I paid for my laptop (and the subsequent 10.8 update) last year
Yes they are.
But a cheap upgrade that i won't use is more expensive then not upgrading.
