Why did you choose your forum software?

For your forum, there has to be a reason more as to why you chose it. Whether it be for ease of use or just a personal favourite, dispense your responses below.

As for myself, I chose Jcink because everybody else within the former ZetaBoards community went for it, and that it is very similar to InvisionFree also (even though it appears more "advanced" and going through the ACP first time can be very daunting for new users). Also that you have the main person fronting it (whose name is John) that actually listens to his members and is always happy to help, and very responsive too.

I no longer have a forum but the last forum I had used MyBB. I chose MyBB because I was always a fan of vBulletin and MyBB is very similar to it. Plus, it's free!

I liked MyBB myself, but only as a member of one forum powered by it. That was all the way back in 2006. Thankfully, I can relive that experience in another I'm on 🙂 Also, there was once a free counterpart of it called IcyBoards until sadly, it was discontinued.

Started with free with WordPress and SMF as it's an good starting point regards building and and see how things go regards free option before getting high. Six months later I then restarted over again with invisionpower and still today.

Reason:

• Most used software regards paid.
• I been using there software on most site's that I'm an member on and always liked it
• Easy to use and so much options that you can do.
• Admin control panel is not linked to the main front site and so won't go down if the front goes
• I always liked it from the start and support is very very good.
• Always updating and keeping security on top.

MyBB is awesome and especially it's cool that it's free. But my buddy online, under my advice, decided to get XenForo. I guess he could have fixed his problem with his theme, but we decided to change.

Anyway, the problem was serious as things wouldn't display and especially threads couldn't be started.

The thing about free software is you might need quite a bit of experience, not saying my partner didn't have it.

Well yes, I can agree with that. No one's going to join a forum if it looks like it's been done in under five minutes. You need to take your time setting up the foundations of it before you make it known to friends and everyone.

When it came to forums under free software, ZetaBoards was the best of all for it as it once gave you all the flexibility it can offer, and was highly recommended for beginners. Jcink on the other hand, requires a more experienced mind imho.

Well, I can agree with that. I tried Forumotion myself a while back and already I was frustrated. To think Jcink's ACP was a pain in the backside... but at least I had more patience.

I use phpBB. Used it for years. I guess I went for it cause one of the forums I loved years back used it, and never looked back.

Not for me it wasn't. I was able to set up a ZB forum in a few hours and open it on that same day.

I used to use this forum software called CreateAForum. It was pretty much just a modified version of SMF that did the hosting and setting up for you. I then got a host and an actual version of SMF and then my new forum was born!

No not really. When I found out that CreateAForum was just SMF but modified, I figured that instead of CreateAForum doing all of the hosting and forum software, I'd do it instead. Since CreateAForum is just a modified SMF, I'm starting to get settled into the actual SMF. What do you mean by 'free counterpart'? I never knew SMF had two seperate pricings.

No... It's just that CreateAForum would be a suitable counterpart to SMF 😛 Same for (the late) IcyBoards with MyBB and Jcink with IPB 🙂 Also, there's a free counterpart of Xenforo called LayerBB apparently.
