Why is Norton so bad?

Huh.

My computer has less RAM than the minimum Windows requires to operate. Start up takes 5 minutes, 10 on a cold boot. Open programs is a hassle, and MSN logs off every so often.

Would removing Norton be my best bet?

What version of Norton do you use? 2009 and 2010 uses a very very small amount of RAM. Previous versions i would consider uninstalling.

I used Norton before and it was really good. It made my computer very slow sometimes with its random scans but it was good overall. At least it was better than McAfee. 🙂

I use Norton and it's really good in my opinion. On my other computer, Avast Free AV didn't detect a virus on the disk so it got corrupted. >.< When I put the same disk in my computer, Norton detected it and removed the file in the disk.

I've always found Norton takes over way too much of my computer, it's almost impossible to do anything as my RAM is only 512mb, while being a great all rounder it just went over board for me 🙁

I don not like Norton because when I accidentally downloaded something that had virus and Norton did nothing. After that i got a new computer and start useing Mcafee, which has been great to me. So far Mcafee has stooped 1 virus (My friend put a CD that had virus) and it only slows down my computer the first few weeks after I instilled it.

I wouldn't trust any TOP named brand rather go with a company that is just starting out and or use default windows one, Reason being hackers go after these bigger name brands. So really no anti virus will save you.

I think Norton sucks. Not only is it not that good of an antivirus but it hogs computer resources in excess and is basically bloatware. Unless they've changed the way they go about things that is, I haven't touched Norton for a long time.

I use avast and AVG.

They have changed over the last 2 or 3 years. It is alot less of a resource hog and that is something they have worked on heavily.

Alot of people like to be living on what something used to be like and thinking it still applies. The same applies to peoples opinions on phpBB for example. People think that phpBB3 is not secure because phpBB2 had some high profile security issues. They live on that fact and think that it still applies to phpBB3 when it doesn't as phpBB3 was a complete rewrite with security in mind. Norton used to be slow and a resource hog but they have worked on those aspects and it is alot better. Software can improve and just because it used to be slow or insecure many years ago, it doesn't mean it still is now.
