Word filters

The only I have is the "n" word because its usually the word least said, and when it is said its ment to hurt someone.

Internet memes are less than three'd (nerds will get it).
Seriously, on my forum we have a primitive version of rep, that only the staff can see and mine is "ITS OVER 9000!" while the rest are numeric amounts.

...And then theirs my favourite, "nou".

We have some filters in place (and we do allow people to turn off the filters) but we do have some young members here. The main reason we use them is to put in the links of spammers as we did go through a time (along with loads of other big phpBB forums and vb forums) where we were getting hammered by WoW spam posts so i just added all their url's in the filters so everytime they posts the link got broken by the filter so they just wasted their time -lol-

To be honest, if you need to use a word filter your board has problems.

Isn't the purpose of word filters to fix problems? I mean we all can't be on our forum 24/7 anyways. I think word filters work depending on your situation. For example I had a nasty little spammer advertising his site through private messages. This was annoying after awhile because I was investing money to promote my forum and attract more members. So I grew tired of giving this guy a free ride and I used word filters to block the site forever.

Why didn't I ban him? Because he was using a proxy account to come back. Did my site have problems? Yep. But I haven't found one site that didn't suffer from a annoying member or two. I think that's called life.

I'm not against promotion either, as long as they post it in the right area of my forum.

That url blocking idea could come in handy, didnt ever think about it. Thanks guys.

I think that it all depends on your forums target age level. If its 13-14 (or under) then have filters. However, 15+ shouldnt have any. Its really the pre-teen vs teen split. My site is aimed at teens, so 15, 16+

It also depends on the content. A garden keeping site shouldnt need to use any bad words, so you would either put in filters or delete posts made with them. A humor site though, why then just about anything goes.

Yeah seriously. I don't want to go into details, but sometimes people can be really persistent with proxy addresses. You would be surprised how many young and old gamers know how to use them.

Whenever I filter words on a board I'll only do it when I can set it so the user chooses whether the filter is on, and put it's default as off.

That way I can make mention of the optional filter in the rules/guidelines and anyone that doesn't want to see swearing can turn it on.

Giving the choice is the best option, IMO, as each member gets what they want 🙂

As for funny ideas I dunno... But that opposites idea would be awesome for April fools... I may even use it 😛

I don't.. I just filter site urls from those who have pm advertised, or blatantly advertised knowing it is against the rules. I also use it as a spell check for words that are often misspelled.

The misspelled word one is a good idea actually -lol-

Thanks. 🙂

If cloaked links become a problem, such as if we have a spammer posting bad links (like I have seen on other boards..) then I'll add those urls too.. but so far, it was just the advertisers and the misspelled words..

I don't filter anything. Most of us are adults and mature (To some degree) at my forum so it is all good.

I filter the f-word(s) and the c-word, nothing else so far, on my previous forum I filtered lots of words, but i'm gonna keep it simple.
