XenForo Price Increase

Renewing licenses is optional. XF is a pretty solid software and you're free to stay on your current version indefinitely, even people still on their 1.x.x version have nothing to worry about.
I do know that it's optional, but security patches are always good to have available.

Not if that money is better spent buying you food to eat or paying your mobile phone bill for the month. 😛

Usually their patches and security fixes are so minor they are nothing to really be concerned about.

It's about time they increased the price, but their latest updates have been underwhelming. Waiting for 3.0 to see what big stuff is coming out

I'm hoping 3.0 is before mid-September so I can grab it before my license expires. haha

IIRC, they said 2.3 and 3.0 shouldn't be "too far apart" or something.

I don't recall reading that, I know they're working on 3.0, but I don't recall seeing anything about it being anywhere near, while 2.3 should be available relatively soon ("soon™").

Hmm, coulda sworn I saw it somewhere. Maybe I misread it. I can still hope that 3.0 does come before mid September though, haha.

Oh absolutely! So long as it's a solid product, I'll take ASAP! 😀

It is however much more breaking between the version. So I'm not really waiting for it until all add ons are updated.

That's the sad thing about upgrades. Sometimes it takes forever for add-ons to be updated and sometimes they never get updated.
True, but as long as the crucial ones get updated, I can remove some that aren't crucial to day-to-day use.

I have a friend who has 20 yrs+ of coding experience, I'm sure I could give him a bit to update an addon for me, if needed. Since we're friends, he'd do it for fairly cheap (only cause we good friends).

How do they earn money if someone buys a license for one time and doesn't renew it then?

That's the model they've always followed, from the vB days through to now, it's been a one time fee with an optional renewal fee. Someone that buys it once and never renews is asking for trouble eventually, but that's their right as a paying customer.

I run about 20-30 add-ons, some aren't even supported any more but add really cool features....

That's why I haven't upgraded just yet for most of my forums. Losing hope though. Seems like some of our favorite add-on developers are gone.

Which add ons are you waiting for?

I really struggle to understand how you can justify $195 /year for a self hosted forum license in this day and age. A lot of it comes down to opinion and what makes you happy, but the thought of having to pay every single year for updates when you can get an objectively decent forum for free is just so confusing.

Regardless of anything else, $195 to buy the license is outrageously overpriced if you're not a business of some kind.

I use a ton of Ozzy's add-ons, hoping something will happen with those add-ons soon. I've also got a couple I use from AddonFlare, but I'm sure that person is gone for good.

The license is $195, renewing it is $60. I don't feel like phpBB/MyBB/SMF come anywhere close to XenForo/Invision, so I'll gladly pay.

Addonflare is gone.

Ozzy is busy working on a subscription add on, which should come this month.

As far as I know, he was hiring a developer but I doubt he has found anyone yet. So that may be why some add ons by him are left incompatible.
