XenForo Price Increase

The license is $195, renewing it is $60. I don't feel like phpBB/MyBB/SMF come anywhere close to XenForo/Invision, so I'll gladly pay.
I agree. I think the cost of a Xenforo self-hosted licence is very reasonable, especially when you compare it with competing products.

I have to agree. I've used just about every "free" forum software, as well as IPB and VB. IMO, none of them even come close to Xenforo! 🙂

I pay around $500/month for my SEO software and domains, so Xenforo is really not an issue. I do find it to be an exceptional piece of forum software, so I'm always willing to pay for it.

Are you making a profit? $500 a month is a LOT to me!

This is a two edged sword. Honestly, it is long overdue in one way, but that is a caveat.
That caveat is that they haven't really brought anything major for their license holders end users to the script in almost 5 years.
If you want to raise prices, you got to offer something good... and as of 2.3, that is still, for me and others, sorely lacking in any encouragement to upgrade. And from talking to several other long time XF admins, they are in the same boat and they have no interest in upgrading immediately because they have numerous add-ons that their sites are dependent upon that still are not upgraded 6 months after the official release. And no matter what Brogan may want you to think, some of those developers are MAJOR developers of XenForo add-ons... Xon and Ozzy47 being at the fore-front.
Of course, you won't hear much about that over on the official XF site as it discourages folks to fork over money for what amounts to almost nothing that the majority can use to make life easier for their end users. You will have your XF fanbois picking up the pitch forks and torches coming after you because you dared to say anything bad about XF.
And I will clearly state because of my aggressiveness towards (and commenting on) what I considered their complacent stupidity I am banned from posting on their site... but honestly it is not big loss to me as now I simply provide assistance [link removed]. The days of the "worship" of the XenForo developers are long over with for me. Their warts have become plain for any to see that look closely enough. And it's sad... because XenForo has so much promise, but it is being killed by the short sightedness of the developers.

At one point a few years ago I was paying $280 a month to run my sites...as a hobby.
Granted, I was wanting to play around with "big iron" and setting up VPS instances for each of my sites.
When you have a set amount of money devoted to your hobby each month, you have to decide where to allocate it. I have since re-allocated the majority of it to hardware purchases for the niche I am involved in. I decided why run a dedicated server and have all the headaches of maintaining it when I can get a decent VPS for much less.

I'm given free access to a high end, fully dedicated server in exchange for me being the server admin. I love that kind of thing, so it's perfect. It uses Plesk as well, which I like much better than cPanel.

I run two sites there, and the owner runs about 10. So all I really pay for now is an SMTP mail service, and a few add-ons. Good stuff!

What is the best XF i see there are several different ones including cloud versions.

I personally think self hosting is the best way to go unless you don't want to deal with the installation and server side of things. If you don't want to worry about installing the software and doing backend stuff, then go with the cloud hosting.

Self hosting is the best way as you can control everything. You’re in control of the entire process. A managed hosting provider is a good option.
Unmanaged is good too, and generally cheaper. But you have to know what you are doing. Don't nuke your server. lol

The best Xenforo option is the one that works best for your particular circumstances.

If it's for a new forum I'd suggest the cloud because there's potentially less to lose financially if you find it's not working out plus you don't need any server knowledge.

If it's for the migration of an already established forum and you have experience of server management I'd consider a self hosted licence.
