Only reason I bet half you guys keep saying phpbb3 is because it's free.

Similarly, people say vB is the best because it's paid.

You can't really compare ZetaBoards with vBulletin. One's a free software on a free host, the other is a paid software that you have to run on your own host...so there's no common ground.

Moving onto the phpBB3 / vBulletin argument, phpBB3 wins for me. vBulletin is very 'long-winded' and not particularly user friendly in the ACP.
I love phpBB3 as well. For a while I used ZetaBoards until I released that its lack of customization as compared to phpBB3 on a web-host is comparable to the difference in speed between a broken down old pickup truck and a fighter jet. ZetabBoards is hosted on good servers for the price but they also have ads which are optional for phpBB3. If you really want your users to enjoy your forum and if you know any major coding language a web-host is unbelievably good compared to little old ZB.

Next there is cost, which IS pretty important. If you are going to pay for VB then you may be forced to include ads to make sure you don't lose too much money while the entirely free phpBB3 system is only a single tier below VB but entirely free. Not only that but after a short period of time you can master phpBB3 and use it fairly easily. While mods are easier to install on ZB phpBB3 allows mods in scripting languages other than javascript which is very helpful. You can find a plethora of good mods and styles for phpBB3 and you can then customize these styles with your own HTML which is impossible with ZB. You can only add code to ZB not modify unless you append the codes to areas of the board, which is harder.

It also shocks me how easy it is to manage phpBB3's styles. All you have to do is use FTP to upload your image and then just replace whichever the old image was from a long list of the style's images. Rather than messing with the code you just select the image you would like to modify, say the theme logo, and then select the new file. It just has to be uploaded into the imageset. Also phpBB automatically detects your styles so they can be installed with two clicks within the ACP after you upload the files.

Also phpBB3 allows user-based permissions and custom admin permissions. With ZB you are forced to make someone either a theme manager, a website manager, a domain manager or a user manager if you do not want to give them full ACP powers but with phpBB3 you may also remove user PM rights directly, ban users from individual forums when needed, and make admins with only non-dangerous powers. Its very simple once you master it. You can even add BBcode without javascript which offers great customization for your board.

Conclusion: phpBB3 all the way. I don't know about VB, but phpBB3 is more than enough and it just blows my mind with how good it is after having used ZetaBoards exclusively before not too extremely long ago. It's a great system as long as you know a bit of HTML and have an FTP client.

Really long essays for the win!

vBulletin wins. 😀

By the way in my own opinion I used to use PhpBB3 I tested it,its really simple...to simple...0_o And I'll admit I think it proply has copied alot of the vBulletin features..so yah phpbb3 copied vBulletin in my own opinion..thats why its #3 top software cuz it copies...🙁
All pieces of forum software are similar because if every single one was different it would be confusing. Anyway, phpBB3 is completely free and easier to use than VBulletin so phpBB may actually be better. See my above explanation as to why I think that.

I dislike both. Both are the worst forum software's to be put on the World Wide Web!
