After 2 decades a movie has officially released exclusively on VHS! A scifi movie in which Ai and humans fight each other in an end of the world style movie. As a massive retro buff, and supporter of the retro scene coming back I went ahead and bought the collectors addition as well as normal version 🙂 I will be making another blog post after that explaining everything about it without spoilers as well. For those in the US I will say I paid $80 for shipping so please keep that in mind if you decide to want to support them as well. Regardless, feel free to check out the blog post to figure out what movie it is and get more information on it <3

I saw a post on Facebook about a Horror movie I'm supporting getting a VHS release and I thought that was cool.

Do they not understand that very very few people still have functioning VHS players? I'm all for the push to have more physical media but why VHS?

I get wanting to flip a middle finger at the people pushing for streaming and digital media but I have a VHS player, only because of a family member giving it to me when they moved.

Most people have capabilities to play DVD and Blu-ray discs. Not so much VHS.

Not to mention they're annoying. Rewinding them every time was a nightmare unless you had one of those speed ones.

Nice to see VHS coming back, glad that I still ahve two VHS players laying around 🙂

Ohhh do tell! My wife and I love horror, it's our favorite genre 😀

The good thing is you can find a VCR fairly cheap from any thrift store, goodwill, pawn shop, etc. I have 6 not counting the 3 VCR CRTs I have and most of those came from Goodwill or thrift stores (Goodwills for some reason have them frequently lol)

YEAH! I'm all for it coming back!

VHS was built for CRTs more-so than dvds. You also have the particles and everything. Some movies genuinely benefit from being on VHS than DVD. In my opinion the Ring & the Grudge are both films that are significantly better, honestly and early 2000s and under movie's better with VHS because of those things. Just my personal reason on as to why.

Call me old fashioned but I still have a VHS player, a cassette player, a record player, a CD player and a DVD player all of which get regular use.

I think it's cool. I had so many VHS tapes when I was young but I have nothing to play them on....also saw that all the TVs that have a player made into them, the prices have been marked up to over $1000 USD by resellers since I guess they're getting popular again. 😛

People are welcome to think so. I do not and it's my opinion. I had tons of VHS, watched them on a regular basis and even had one of those speed VHS rewinders where you popped the VHS in and it would rewind the VHS back to the start to free the player up to watch another.

YES! That's what I love to hear 😀 We've been collecting records here and there recently and it's nice to put them on every so often.

That's fair and I actually just got one of those rewinders not too long ago and it's lovely I'm not going to lie 😀

Probably because no one would pay any attention to it if it was being released on DVD as the only thing of notice is the physical media format used. He's charging 18 to 30 dollars for a copy of it which is a bit pricey when blu ray movies go for around that price.

Then I'm happy for you, one of the people they were aiming for with this release.

Probably...most likely true. That's astonishing. I don't remember the brand new VHS tapes being worth that much. I can understand why some horror film fans might prefer the VHS because of the distortion effects sometimes.

Did you ever have one of those DVD rewinders?

He went with a VHS company of some sorts to manufacture and ship the VHS' out. So I'm assuming they probably take a decent cut and that's why the price markup is so high.

I feel like this isn’t really meant to be played on actual VHS players so much as it’s tapping into the same vibe that vinyl has right now. Most vinyl collectors aren’t spinning records every day; they’re displaying them, collecting them, or enjoying the nostalgia factor. Sure, vinyl players are still way more common than VHS players, but the trend feels similar.

That’s why this release reads more like a collector’s item than a practical media format. Very few people still have working VCRs, which others here have pointed out, and even those who do often mention how annoying VHS tapes were to use; rewinding, wear, tracking issues, all of it. So I don’t think this is really aimed at people who are still holding out with their old VHS setups.

It’s more about the novelty, the retro aesthetic, and the niche crowd that enjoys owning something unusual or nostalgic. In that sense, it makes a lot more sense, even if almost nobody is going to actually watch it on tape.

I know they are talking about using VHS as an anti-AI thing to protect the media, but... ripping a VHS to digital is actually easier than ripping a DVD, as DVDs have DMR protection software and VHS just needs a VHS to Digital recorder. So idk about this and it kind of makes me feel like it is marketing fluff to sell an awful movie.
