I feel like this isn’t really meant to be played on actual VHS players so much as it’s tapping into the same vibe that vinyl has right now. Most vinyl collectors aren’t spinning records every day; they’re displaying them, collecting them, or enjoying the nostalgia factor. Sure, vinyl players are still way more common than VHS players, but the trend feels similar.
That’s why this release reads more like a collector’s item than a practical media format. Very few people still have working VCRs, which others here have pointed out, and even those who do often mention how annoying VHS tapes were to use; rewinding, wear, tracking issues, all of it. So I don’t think this is really aimed at people who are still holding out with their old VHS setups.
It’s more about the novelty, the retro aesthetic, and the niche crowd that enjoys owning something unusual or nostalgic. In that sense, it makes a lot more sense, even if almost nobody is going to actually watch it on tape.
I know they are talking about using VHS as an anti-AI thing to protect the media, but... ripping a VHS to digital is actually easier than ripping a DVD, as DVDs have DMR protection software and VHS just needs a VHS to Digital recorder. So idk about this and it kind of makes me feel like it is marketing fluff to sell an awful movie.
