Well stop being a smartass. You told him, very rudely, that "the bible is just as violent. Go read it." I would hope you would read both the Koran AND bible before making that statement. I'll tell you this, however, from my simple understanding of the Koran, I do know that it happens to say things such as "You cannot befriend the infidel unless you must to protect yourself" and it both allows and encourages lying to the infidel. Christianity has always been about embracing, but converting, the "Infidel". There was a dispute about this in the early days of the religion where they decided that it was okay to interact with the "infidel".
There are some violent things in the bible, but those are primarily in the old testament. Christians go by the new testament. I imagine there are also Muslims who only go by parts of their holy book, as later parts will have "overridden" these earlier rules and actions. These Muslims are what I call the moderate Muslims because they are the peaceful ones. Moderate Christians are the people who don't want to follow those verses in Leviticus that command to kill Gay people, as they take the context to mean that it is not a long-term rule, just something that happened once.
However, I do believe that in the middle east, there are prominent sects of Muslims that believe in certain, more violent, interpretations of the Koran. These Radical Muslims consist of the government of Saudi Arabia and Iran, primarily, and some, but not all, of its people. Who blew up the world trade center? Saudis. It's clear that countries like that are hot-spots for anti-western Islam. However, many Muslims aren't radical like that. Those people are perfectly fine.l
