Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Delete them for good or just hide them until I get more users?

I did spend a lot of time on the permissions for them just to delete them.

There is a hide feature that won't let the users, except mods and admins, see them.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Hide them from the legend if you don't want to delete them. I don't know why you created all of them groups at the start anyway. Wait until your forum get's active before creating so many groups.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Is that a baby bird on your icon holding two guns?

Looks kinda cute but also a bit alarming.

But mostly cute.

Anyway, ok, I'll get rid of all but

Admins, Mods, Banned, and Spammers.

Galactic Nuisance will be spammers.

The reason I'm gonna keep those, plus Bounty Hunters, is to be amusing and have people collect "bounties" on trolls and spammers to make my life easier and also possibly give out goodies, though I don't know what those are.

Should I let everyone use polls or only special users, i.e., users with like 1000+ posts or users who won Bounty Hunter of the Month Award or something like that?

If everyone posts a poll, ti could get a little cluttered.

Will clean those things tomorrow...wait, it already is tomorrow!!!

40.gif40.gif40.gif40.gif

Anyway, I'll update it later.

Right now I have to worry about sleeping and writing assembly language code for ITK 225 tomorrow before it's due the 7th (my 22nd birthday by the way).

Speaking of birthdays, should I let users do something special on their birthday, and if so, what should I do special or let them do special?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, can FP cash by my new features for my forum?

Also, don't download Firefox 4 just yet...

I did and it seems to sometimes have my signal or the page get broken or something like that it said. Also, ti doesn't like Blackboard that much for some reason and I have ICQ, Yahoo, and some other thing got put there by some service or whatever called Dealio and now I have like 3 or so toolbars and it often will show what I had searched for earlier and save them in a Yahoo toolbar thing to make it easier to search, which can be a bit annoying . Only version of Firefox that I'm not really that fond of. Perhaps it was just a beta one or something that just came out and they'll fix it soon....I hope.

Are you familiar with the term PHPBB or something like that? I think that's what my forum is running on.
I think I could run a database or whatever but it would probably require me to remake the entire forum, plus I don't have a server and don't know how to operate one and probably can't afford one, and if servers are like mainframes, I probably can't fit one either!
Should entire forum have same style or can every miniforum be different page style?

-- 06 Apr 2011, 19:19 --

Also, how come lately a lot of websites, not mine, which I'm kind of relieved, seem to be highlighting stuff like PHBB or Yahoo or AOL or Wikipedia , etc?

Is this a new standard feature of all websites or is it one of Mozilla's ideas as...now that I think of it, the highlighting and linking seemed to happen around exactly when I got version 4.0.<br /><br />-- 06 Apr 2011, 19:21 --<br /><br />And come to think of it, it seems that the links aren't always there.....

http://phpbbcommunities.com/kb.php

Please read that or the blog here on FP, seems you have a lot of questions that could be easily figured out by accustoming yourself with your forum script. It's fine to ask questions but it's better to find out the really simple stuff yourself when its already been written 😉

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok, I did.

It appears someone(not me) has joined my forum.

How did I ever come up on the search engine if I can't even do that with Google sites?

I haven't searched my forum yet, but some people have apparently already found it.

Will not be getting my own domain as that cost $ which I don't have much of.

I don't have a server or whatever they want to host a database and fear I'd need like a mainframe or at least a ton of RAM or a half TB hard drive or something.<br /><br />-- 18 Apr 2011, 21:54 --<br /><br />Hey, another guy joined my forum!

Soon I shall make the JCF pay for all the times it banned me!

Mohahaha!

Now look at my forum!

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Well I saw this thread became active again and your forum only has 10 topics. Like I said before your forum is only going to get big once you get your own Domain name, some hosting and sumbit it to some directories and also use your FP cash on here to buy posts for your forum.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

As people have already said, i think the way forward will be a domain. If you cant afford one now, save up for one. Shouldnt take you long. Also try to get away from the default theme.

While theres no harm in the default theme, it needs to be given your sites identity!

Also for the size of the forum, you dont need all those groups aswell.... Hide them for now untill you get people on there and people posting. It may seem silly at first when people say you have to get posts on your forum, and yes i may seem like your talking to yourself at first, but when people see the posts on there, and something that interests them, they will join up and start talking, then maybe post there own threads...

Its a life cycle thats got to be followed, it cant be given on a silver spoon im afraid!

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I got offered a free domain and better host, and will agree to it, provided I don't have to code it all myself.

That's another reason that I chose the host I did, it came predesigned.<br /><br />-- 20 Apr 2011, 18:00 --<br /><br />Ok, new forum is:

http://www.saveoursnips.jchosting.co.cc/forum/index.php

However, I can't figure out how to put up logo yet.

And I don't have as many styles as the old one.

I have a better domain name, etc, but I'm afraid I have less features so far than the old one.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I tried the new domain thing and it seems I'm getting far less features than when I had the other guys that you guys complained so much about.

Personally, what I'd like to say about those who refuse to join forums just because the owner doesn't have his own personal domain, etc, I can't or I'll be banned from Forum Promotion.

Anyway, people will probably like it less if I don't even have any logo, or a totally useless one, which is what I'm stuck with right now on the second forum.

Besides, the other forums on that one must be getting a lot of users if they are having serious spammer trouble.

In order to get spammers, your forum has to have quite a few hits I think.

So no more bringing up the "You've got to get your own domain" stuff, ok.

I've tried it and it won't work. I'm in college and cant' buy one for quite some time. I also don't have time to keep recreating new forums every time someone offers me new features that you guys say forums simply MUST have.

Could we just drop the "own your own domain" stuff before I get mad, my day has already been very frustrating, and start spitting rubber nickels?

Besides, Lone Wolf doesn't seem to think the same as you other guys.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

"Rubber Nickels?"
The only way you'll get yourself banned is if you start doing some illegal things, spamming, or completely flaming a staff member. I have a forum that was spammed to death, and I was the only user on it.
If you keep complaining about college, then get off the computer.
Geez man, your posts are all over the place...

Well We ment DOMAIN NAME AS IN PAID DOMAIN NAME!!!!!!!! If you can't afford to put money in your own website, then you shouldn't have one. Also you don't have to recreate your forum, all you have to do is going to Thumbtak, Host gator, etc buy a Domain and POINT THE DOMAIN AT YOUR CURRENT FREE SITE!!!!!! I swear your website and profile has to be a joke, if you can't figure this out this is sad...

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I know right^
Are we being punk'd?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Well, maybe I will when I get the money.

But right now I'm gonna have to go as is.

If I get more people, I can then justify getting ads. But fi I don't have anyone yet, I can't. If I had ads, I could use them to pay for domain, etc.

But first I need the people.

OK HERE IS WHAT YOU DO! GO TO FORUM CASH EXCHANGE AND PAY PEOPLE USING FP CASH TO POSTS ON YOUR FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also people won't buy direct ads, without a domain name.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I can post on my own forum until I have enough FP cash.

Besides, if I got like a ton of cash, couldn't I just buy a domain name from FP?
Anyway, I'm not going to buy any domains until I can get enough people to justify owning one.

If I had 10000 users, then it would probably be ok to have a couple of ads to help pay for domain.

Also, if you're hiring people to post, I'm hoping this guy isn't one of them...

Ten THOUSAND? Are you freaking insane? A more likely goal is...100 or 50

I love how go on my forum and find one spam member who has never posted anything.
Seriously man, you got issues.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

One spam member?

More like about 100!

But anyway, how did you get that many members?

I can't even get the spammers! 🙁

My forum is being enhanced greatly, yet nobody is usually coming.

I can't get my own domain right of way.

I know the domain sounds a bit silly, but I had tried to make it a Google site originally.

Don't know how to change it without starting over.

Besides, the more I post here, the more FP cash I get.

Also, about the spammers in your forum, other people have told me that users will not be happy that a forum doesn't appear to be trying that much to stop profile spam.

Just saying.

I wish we could stop the fighting.

If the mods see this, they'll probably close the thread and ban us both.

-- 29 Apr 2011, 19:36 --

My new goal is 10 users on my forum.

Then 50.

Then 100.

Then 200.

Then 500.

Then 1000.

etc

How do I get more people in my forum?<br /><br />-- 29 Apr 2011, 20:40 --<br /><br />It appears that the Forum Promotion forum has the same host as mine, yet he has a ton of members and nobody is saying Fowler should have his own domain.

Though he has some features that they don't, which I'm confused on.

Anyway, I'm going to let people use ads once I can get them configured.

I'm trying make the forum more professional.
