phpBB3 information

phpBB3 being opensource doesn't make it safer... If anything that makes it more likely to be unsecure as more people would use it and anybody can get their grubby hands on the code to find possible exploits -razz-

I personally love the new phpBB default skin

It's such a step up from there previous release and gives the forum a more professional look

Yes, the skin is nice, I think it makes it look professional.

My friends forum awesomeaxing signed up to get PHPBB3 but hw long does it take to get it? He is using a createforum.net server.

It is up to the hosts... This is a good way to dee how good your host is. If they make it available quickly then they are pretty good and if hey take forever then they are bad and don't really care.

Best to ask this on Createforum.net.... Alot of free hosts do use phpBB3 now.

Freeforums is going to be terrible when they crash so much though. -roll- So many people are going to fall into that hole.

thats why i dont recommend free forum hosting unless they allow me to store local backups so i can move server if anything bad happens

I dont know of any phpbb hosts that let you do that but jcink.com does.

I would always say host the forum yourself as it is simple to install so you don't really need any knowledge of forums and you get loads of control and you can make backups. You can get hosting very cheap anyway.

I believe prophpbb.com allows free, unencrypted DB backups -😉-

Paid hosting is always better though, full control, no forced ads, add any kind of MOD or style you want etc.

Full access to edit the styles such as each template or the css aswell comes with paid hosting. Seriously though phpBB is simple to use and simple to install and update and you don't need any previous knowledge as you get instructions to guide you through everything like installing and updating even though it pretty much explains itself anyway. If you do ever get stuck there is always people to help you like us and phpBB.com.

how much is hosting? I'd never really considered it? Can you easily move your forum without having your member re-register / keep the stats etc?

The cost really depends on what host you want to go with. The more expensive hosts tend to be more reliable in most cases.

The host we use is about £1.50 a month although we are one of the better servers they have hence the good speed and no problems.

If you are on a free forum host it can be transferred if you host can give you a backup. Sometimes it is free although in most cases you need to pay as that s how they get their money.

What host are you with at the moment?

i dont know just using an invision forum not sure about hosting stuffs :x

and xfish lets hope so..

If it is the one in your sig then no it can't be transferred to another host. IPBfree don't give backups and even if they do it is a very modded IPB 1.3 forum.
