Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

With 50 FP cash ou can buy:
- An alpha package- viewforum.php?f=6
- Quick view (almost a full review) - viewforum.php?f=20
- Signature ad - viewforum.php?f=42
- Bubble ad - viewforum.php?f=106

You can earn more or spend some FP cash in the exchange forums, marketplace or graphics exchange.

If you are feeling lucky, you could enter the FP lottery - points.php?mode=lottery

You can actually do quite alot with that much FP cash.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Plus, all you have to do is reply to topics to get more FP$. That part is fairly easy.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

There. I fixed that glitch with the Ahsoka icon blocking out the forum text. It was a mistake.

As for logos, I can't just have an image or the text will be put there and cut part of it off like it did in one of my subforums when I made the image too big and wide.

As for styles, I don't have access to the coding to fiddle with it. I have hundreds of choice but can't have like 10 colors for my forum background for instance. I don't have total free reign over the PHPBB3 codes.

I can suggest something to the hosts but cannot for instance add ads. He said that he didn't like the idea of people making money off of his free service.

The most I can probably offer is ad links.

Also, what's an alpha package?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I wonder...if I had about 10000 FP cash, could I buy a domain name or at least the respect of some members on this forum....

I am curious about something, how come some guy with 9500+ posts has "I'm Banned!" as his rank? How do I get banned with THAT many posts?

I was partially wondering because I was worried that I might get banned evn though I have quite a few posts, if this domain name and forum argument escalates into a flame war.

I've been banned (not here) before. It's not cool!<br /><br />-- 02 May 2011, 20:17 --<br /><br />Any day now I hope to get new members.

Somebody offered to help me with my forum. Said it needed work.

But I don't know how to create an MSN account. And if I do, don't think I'd use it, even I knew how to do that.

I already have a ton of accounts all over the internet as it is.

Some of them I made to ban hop from JCF but somehow I couldn't even get in (no, they didn't catch me), except the last time. Boy did I get it good! I'm still banned from that till June 21. Arrgh! I was trying to promote my forum, while banned. They foiled my plan. So mad!

Notice my sympathetic lines in my forum rules toward people who get banned(but not for spam and/or pron, no sympathy there!)?

What's even more bizarre is after getting in a disagreement with some mods on Java Programming Forums about how much you should help programmers and eventually they were upset and told me I couldn't post bad advice (I never mean to, it just happens), I'd be banned for a week. So I made a sock, decided not to use and it confessed, they thought perhaps I was taunting them, or were mad as maybe I wasn't supposed to have a sock anyway, and banned me for a week.

So I've been banned on TWO forums.

Part of the good thing in having a forum is that YOU can't be banned from it! Though I have other reasons of course, though I'll admit that was certainly one of them.

Be an idiot like sbfc, that's the best way lol. If you look though a lot of people here in the couple thousands + are banned since after a while it feels like you can get away with anything. That is of course until you do too much stupid sheet and are gone for good 😛.

But anyhow, the way you're going about running your forum is a catch-22. You don't want to put a lot of effort in until you have a lot of members, but people won't join a forum that isn't profesionally done and brimming with activity. Try doing some of the things Fowler suggested :great:

For one thing I may add, you should change the topic title. No one can tell your site is about star wars unless they click it. You also don't want to make it a point that your forum has no users on it when you promote it 😉

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Well, a subdomain is still a domain.

-- 04 May 2011, 10:24 --

What or who is sbfc?

-- 04 May 2011, 10:36 --

Also, I just had a strange thought. What if Bin Laden let himself die so that U.S. and Pakistan would go to war?

The whole incident is really straining our relations with them. If we do decide to blame them for his hiding there near the capital and/or they get mad about us coming in their with the military without their permission, it could lead to a nuclear war, which is far more damage than Osama could have done while just hiding out and taunting us till he died of old age.

That and the fact that we shot him unarmed might well gain sympathy for him and his cause.

Also, as for the banned people, to me, it seems they're fine. It just seems they got banned for no reason.

I checked their last posts and it never says afterward "I've had enough of that! You're banned!" or something like that by a mod or admin.

-- 04 May 2011, 13:23 --

Why won't anyone join my forum?

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

They're not fine... one of them was arrested for having sex with a 5 year old...

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Oh my! 13.gif13.gif

Didn't know that.

It just seemed odd that often their final posts before being banned didn't seem inflammatory. After checking into more detail into these guys posts, I've found they've deserved what they got!

I have looked at some of these guys and I must admit that some of them are very weird, to say the least.

No, what I was kinda worried about is that you might be banning people for every little thing. I sometimes tend to get in arguments with people and/or go off topic, even very off topic. I have ADHD and Asperger's so it often just happens.

Anyway, I was worried that the argument in that one forum where I was arguing with XMRider was close to getting us banned.

I was just worried when I noticed it's not just the newbies but some of the veterans getting banned too.

That's mainly what I was worried about.

Now I know that I have nothing to fear....I hope.

I also found that, if I look at their posts enough, I can see what they did wrong.

One guy, though not in his final post, had posted burka porn or something.

Another guy was trying to flirt with Darthmaul!<br /><br />-- 04 May 2011, 17:36 --<br /><br />I think that, and correct me if I'm wrong, most of the guys banned that have lots of posts are chronic trolls , not spammers. That's what confused me. Normally one forums I'm used to just seeing people spamming and that's about it for getting banned, except very rarely.

Also, just wondering, were you the one who turned that guy into the police?
If not, how'd you find out that he did that? I mean, unless he's a complete moron in addition to a vile pervert, though stupidity and perversion often go together, he probably wouldn't post that here.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Anyway, how is my site now? I've tried adding things to it.

Don't have my own domain.

Can probably get some for free but it usually has a limit to space or something if it is.

As I have pretty much no new members, I can't justify the expenses necessary to buy my own domain.

I am posting here and there.

The reason I have so many groups is to give the impression of a well developed and well used forum or something like that.

So far it isn't working, not even with my latest SEO trick that put the forum link in my signature in a forum that I have over 1100 posts in.

Perhaps if I changed the link text to the forum title or something, it's SEO would go through the roof.

I also added it to my FP signature to further increase SEO but still no luck.

Why can't I get any new people? 2.gif

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

You added more groups....how many times do I have to tell you?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

I may have added one more group.

You told me to make the forum look like it's being used a lot to have a lot of posts so I figured, from the same logic, that I should have a lot of groups for the same reason.

Anyway, I don't often come up on the search engines.

Also, some "groups" aren't really groups.

Nobody can join Moderators(unless I let them), or Admins(I will probably only allow 1 or 2 others besides myself to get this position (I have one sock that is an admin as well) as Admins can remove Admin status of other admins and I don't want any mutiny making me lose control of my own forum.)

I need to get more hits on the search engine and/or get more word out about the forum.

I tried the Field of Dreams approach: If you build it, they will come.

But nobody's coming!!!

What now?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

What...
You're posts are all over the place. You need like 3 or 4 groups.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Ok.

What should those groups be?

Should I just have

Admins, Guests, Banned, and Regular for now?

-- 13 May 2011, 21:51 --

Guests don't get shown unless they post.

Anyway, what about my Group Forums then? It exists assuming that there are groups.

Should I hide it for now then?

-- 13 May 2011, 22:05 --

Ok, have significantly reduced the number of visible groups.

Now how do I get users?

It appears I got one and didn't know it but he/she never activated account, only registered.

I found a background that looks pretty cool.

Probably might not find a better one.

Also, to be safe, should I, in my guest forum, have all posts On Moderation Queue? Right now I just have the visual confirmation as the only thing blocking any potential nasty spammers.<br /><br />-- 13 May 2011, 22:41 --<br /><br />I saw you forum and I loved it and joined it.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Is there any way to get a domain name that WON'T expire after a certain amount of time and won't need to keep being bought over and over to keep it? If it costs $25 for such a thing, vs. like $3 per yer or 6 months or whatever, it'll be ok. As long as it's not like above $50 or something.

I am trying to change part of my address to fix that silly glitch I made when naming it (I was trying to make it be a Google site but it didn't work and I got stuck with the terrible address.) I'm currently asking host to fix it.

Still, why so few members on my forum?

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

What do you mean by "crazy messy"?

If you mean the address, well, I had intended to make it a Google site, hence the weird name, but it didn't work obviously. I asked the domain owner to change it for me as I'm not sure how (or even if I can).

As for the layouts, I have tons of pre-designed ones but can't quite make every little detail I want to.

As for you possibly seeing it a mess, I have an explanation for that (though it never seems to change anything for the guest view that I'm aware of), but anyway, I experiment with some styles, trying to design a really good look.

Some are cool, some are ok but somewhat messy, and some obviously weren't meant to go together and make a total mess of words and links and stuff. It's possible you visited the forum while I was testing out backgrounds for the main forum.

Also, I think I found a way to get a free domain name for a year.

But I'd have to rebuild the site and also am not familiar with the new site that I made a forum at just to see what it'd look like and what features it had. Especially the possibility of having my own domain name allured me there. But I'd need like 16000 cash or something there and that could take a while anyway.

Also, it appears that the forum in question might have a 1 GB storage limit and I don't think the one I have now has one.

Could someone either come to my forum and/or please tell me here in plain Galactic Basic and not Shyrwook or whatever what is keeping people from joining my forums? I'm been asking over and over but keep getting not straight answers.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Plainly said, Your forum is a mess - Images are all over the place, some of the forum descriptions are far too long. You have far too many categories for a new forum and your banner looks squashed. Right now the user groups are the least of your worries. Work on getting images that are the correct size. Having maybe 6 or 8 categories at most and having short, interesting descriptions.

Re: Promoting new (and sadly memberless pretty much) forum

Am trying to work on banner.

Too long of descriptions.

Ok. Fixing that.

Will hide some categories I guess. Thought having more would be more inviting.
